Visiting? – St. Mary's Episcopal Church

Visiting?

Welcome – we are so glad you are here! We give thanks for you and for your life, and we are grateful to God for the opportunity to welcome you!

Whether you are new to church, just getting back to church or looking for a new church home, you are welcome at St. Mary’s. There are no “requirements” to belong to this community. Do as much or as little as you like. Everything we do, everything we offer, is open to all, regardless of whether you are a “member” of this church. You are welcome here.

What to expect:

We understand that visiting a church for the first time can be a daunting experience. Below we’ve answered some anticipated questions and provided brief information. Please explore the rest of the website to learn more or email us at info@stmarysgoochland.org or on a Sunday morning visit, ask anyone you see with a name tag for help. St. Mary’s is made up of a number of buildings and worship spaces. Here is a link to St. Mary’s Campus Map to help guide you during your visit.

What time are services on Sunday morning?
At 9 a.m. there’s a traditional Eucharistic worship in our smaller chapel, Little St. Mary’s. At 11 a.m., we worship a traditional Eucharist or a simple Morning Prayer service in our larger worship space, New St. Mary’s, and consider this our “family service.” But children are welcome at both!

How long do services last?
Both services usually run about an hour.

What about communion?
Holy Eucharist is celebrated every Sunday at every service, and ALL are welcome. During Morning Prayer Sundays, an optional, brief Holy Eucharist is offered after the service. Gluten-free communion wafers are available. If you wish to simply receive a blessing, approach the altar rail with arms crossed on your chest and you’ll be offered a quiet blessing.

Can I bring my children to church services?
Children are welcome and active participants at St. Mary’s particularly at the 11 a.m. Sunday morning service. Worship bags that contain a coloring page based on the Gospel reading for younger children are available in the wooden bins near the entrances to New St. Mary’s.

Where can I park?
St. Mary’s is located at 12291 River Road, Richmond, VA 23238. There are two marked entrances – east and west – along River Road. Each entrance leads to gravel parking lots. Please review St. Mary’s Campus map to help direct you.

What should I wear?
Officially, there’s no dress code. But St. Mary’s is a community that comes in their Sunday best. Suits are not required but you will find men in bowties and coat jackets or a simple button down with khakis. Women wear Sunday dresses or dress slacks with a blouse. But we encourage you to show up in whatever feels comfortable and is appropriate for you.
