      Critics Consensus

The Girl may be too prosaic to properly evoke its subject, but sterling performances by Toby Jones and Sienna Miller bring to life one of cinematic history's most horrific abuses of power.

Joanne Ostrow Denver Post Sienna Miller is lovely as Hedren, a fresh-faced beauty with a reserve that made her seem sculpted from marble. Aug 5, 2020 Full Review Linda Stasi New York Post The Girl could have been a great movie, but the screenplay turns Hedren into a paragon of female strength and morality... And then there's Sienna Miller. Halfway believable but missing what Hitchcock called "the volcano inside." Aug 5, 2020 Full Review Matt Zoller Seitz New York Magazine/Vulture There's ultimately not enough imagination, enough art, in The Girl to justify its having been made. Aug 5, 2020 Full Review Matt Roush TV Guide Toby Jones is pitch-perfect and eerily nuanced in revealing the self-loathing underbelly of the corpulent Hitch. Aug 5, 2020 Full Review Tom Gliatto People Magazine For The Girl to work, the director's perversity needs to come up against the actress's desperate will to fight him off. Miller is believably blonde, and that's about it. Aug 5, 2020 Full Review Jane Simon Daily Mirror (UK) Gwyneth Hughes's economical script delivers every descending step of Hedren's destructive relationship with the director, without ever tipping over into sensationalism. Shioka O Worth spend time to see the possible behind-the-scene after watching The Bird and Marnie. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/11/23 Full Review Audience Member Toby Jones is excellent as ever and Sienna Miller great. Seems like Hitchcock fans and producers of the schmaltzy 2012 hitchcock (same year) want this movie to disappear as it has a negative depiction of the fondly remembered director. I think it unlikely that there was nothing in the accusations of Tipi Hedren even if what she says are contradictory. It is unfortunate that contemporary culture is such that if impropriety is alleged then all the work of the artist is blacklisted. Gripping and more and more relevent post Weinstein/ me too. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/15/23 Full Review Audience Member I really enjoyed this film. It really shows Alfred Hitchcock and his dark side. Sienna Miller also does a stunning performance as Tippi Hedren. I would totally watch it again. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/13/23 Full Review Audience Member This film depicts Alfred Hitchcock's unhealthy obsession with a model he cast in the lead role of The Birds, Tippi Hedren. Toby Jones does a spot on job as Hitchcock, getting both the voice and the look right. Seanna Miller also does a great job as the increasingly fragile Tippi Hedren who suffers through Hitchcock's bullying to get the role of a lifetime. Unlike the other Hitchcock biopic starring Anthony Hopkins, this one paints Hitchcock it a much less favourable light, depicting him as a bully and sexual predator. How much is true with these biopics is always debatable but the film was entertaining and shocking. Worth seeing if you've ever enjoyed any of the man's films and a good comparison with the Anthony Hopkins version. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/20/23 Full Review Audience Member Beautiful performances and stunning Sienna Miller. However, I was disappointed to find out that this movie did not stand up to the truth of the story it was telling. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Interesting to watch..... Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/17/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
