This essential Karl Marx biography expertly weaves the complex personality of the legendary thinker through the turbulent passage of global history.

The first biography to give equal weight to both the work and life of Karl Marx, A
World to Win follows Marx through childhood and student days, a difficult and sometimes tragic family life, his far-sighted journalism, and his enduring friendship and intellectual partnership with Friedrich Engels.

Building on the work of previous biographers, Liedman employs a commanding knowledge of the 19th century to create a definitive portrait of Marx and his vast contribution to the way the world understands itself. He shines a light on Marx’s influences, explains his political and intellectual interventions, and builds on the legacy of his thought. Liedman shows how Marx’s masterpiece,
Capital, illuminates the essential logic of a system that drives dizzying wealth, grinding poverty, and awesome technological innovation to this day.

Compulsively readable and meticulously researched,
A World to Win demonstrates that Marx’s work remains the bedrock for any true understanding of our political and economic condition, even two centuries after his death.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“This book makes clear that Marx’s ideas, going on two centuries old, still have meaning in the present. Outstanding. [A book] to turn to for reference and deeper insight.”
Kirkus (starred review)

“Neoliberalism is increasingly exposed as a failed experiment and many people are now exploring the tradition of radical politics for solutions to the challenges we now face. This book brings to life the early history of the socialist tradition.”
—John McDonnell, MP Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer

A World to Win is an illuminating investigation into the multiple personalities of this infinitely fascinating figure. There’s a strong case to be made that Marx was neither a philosopher nor a scientist. He discovered his own ‘ways of seeing’ that defied and continue to defy easy categorization.”
—Jason Barker, Los Angeles Review of Books

“A lucid, scholarly guide … Those searching for a truly detailed discussion of Marx should turn here.”
—Andrew Stuttaford, Wall Street Journal

“Liedman is convinced that we live in a period of striking similarity to Marx’s own, and therefore his analysis of society and history are still appropriate. Unlike many other biographies of Marx, the present volume combines in-depth personality narrative and significant comments on Marx’s own works. This analysis not only looks at the social and political context of the early industrial revolution Europe, but also takes into consideration the intellectual environment of the time, German philosophy, and socialist and liberal ideas. Highly recommended.”
Choice

“A persuasive and accessible guide to how a GND could be made a reality.”
Ann Pettifor, Guardian

Though often declared dead and irrelevant in America, the work of Karl Marx continues to live on elsewhere, particularly in Europe. Marx devoted his adult life to explaining the nature and operation of capitalism, a matter that continues to inspire and puzzle our contemporaries in America. For example, during a recent press conference, Jerome Powell, the chairman of the Federal Reserve was asked when, given low unemployment and high corporate profits, could people start getting meaningful pay raises. Mr. Powell replied that the near stagnant pay issue was a "puzzle," but he continued that he wasn't prepared to call it a "mystery." (Sacramento Bee, 6/15/18) Readers seeking answers to questions like this will want to read Sven-Eric Liedman's monumental book. The author combines a biography of Marx with very detailed analyses of Marx's thought. Marx's unpublished notes on economics, the Grundrisse, gets more than fifty pages of close analysis.(Liedman also appears on a Youtube discussion of his book worth watching.) Readers more interested in the life story of Marx will probably be better off reading earlier biographies by Werner Blumenberg or Francis Wheen.

Absolutely fantastic. A non soviet view about Karl Marx's legacy and relevance in today's world. None of the demonizing critique normally done. A view about the economist, philosopher and what he left to us.

Arguably, this is one of the best bios of Marx out there. The author does a great job of not romanticizing Marx; also tries to weave Marx's works/ideas into his life story and how he grew as a thinker and person.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Book

I like this book. It's main strength is to bring out clearly the sharp intelligence and innovative thinking of Marx and it's importance to understanding society. In this respect he does better than Stedman Jones' "Karl Marx: greatness and illusion" who is very good on detail but does get lost in it. I found Liedman's style more engaging too and only in part because of the larger print.
