It stars Danielle Macdonald as Willodean Dickson, a plus-size girl with an ex-beauty queen mother, played by Jennifer Aniston. When Willodean, nicknamed "Dumplin,'" decides to enter a pageant in her small Texas town as a protest, she ends up learning a lot about herself and her mother. Willodean and her late Aunt Lucy, who she felt understood her better than her mother, had their own Dolly Parton fan club so the soundtrack features several of the star's hits, and some new ones written by Dolly and Linda Perry.

Although the movie is set in the fictional town of Clover City, Texas, it was filmed in small towns outside Atlanta, Ga.
According to Country Living, the majority of filming took place in the small town of Jonesboro, Ga.

Covington, Ga., served as the town square seen in several scenes, including a scene when Willodean was younger and is seen emerging from a donut shop, which was converted from a local store called Covington Dance Shoppe. Later, an older Willodean is seen driving around the picturesque square.

Scenes were also filmed in:
- A western dance bar called Southern Comfort Restaurant and Lounge in Conley, Ga., which doubled as a drag club filled with Dolly Parton impersonators.
- The pageant scenes were shot at the Cobb County Civic Center in Marietta, Ga.
- Scenes in Willodean's school were filmed at Marietta Middle and High Schools.
- Scenes at the pool were filmed in Conyers, Ga.
