I could stay here, become someone different.
I could stay here, become someone better.

If this moment in "Colors and the Kids" doesn't move something within you, you're a cold shadow where a human should be. Or you don't like this type of music. Or you don't like Cat Power. But still.

Unequivocally dark and troubled. This album reeks of vile schizophrenia yet is gorgeously tender enough to sound like she's making the most difficult confessions of her life to an old friend. YEP. This is pretty much the sound of introversion falling apart. Perfect.

Moon Pix is an album with an interesting back story. Most of the songs for the album were written in one night, after Chan Marshall, otherwise know as Cat Power had had an hallucinatory nightmare in 1997. She was so frightened that she went and picked up her guitar, just to distract herself from the nightmareish visions, and she started to write songs. These songs.

When I first put on Moon Pix, I was completely in awe of just how gorgeous it was and I was completely pulled in. It just has that mood. Musically and vocally, it's just so incredibly soft and as I listened to it I just wanted it to lull me to sleep because it's just gorgeous music. But unfortunately I first listened to it on Spotify, so I would have been interrupted by an advert for webuyanycar.com or Talk To Frank or some other equally annoying nonsense.

Also, I always hang on every single word. Even though you could drift away and turn your brain off, you can't help but listen to what she's saying. The lyrics are absolutely fantastic - so full of pain and misery and she manages to sound incredibly sad, almost tortured, but oddly alluring. Her voice compliments the whole tone of the album perfectly, and she delivers every single line perfectly. The instrumentation is really understated, it has this raw unfinished quality to it and that's actually its biggest charm. The music works as a backdrop for her lyrics and vocals. This is most definitely the work of a very depressed, sad, nervous, vulnerable, drunken girl.

Moon Pix is an incredibly introspective, beautiful, haunting and honest album that's so personal and full of emotion. It's also an album where she really came of age and matured both as a songwriter and as an artist. It remains her very best work. It's music that's full of sadness, pain and sorrow. But it's gorgeous, intimate and melancholic.

Beautiful but you really have to be in the right mood for it, just be aware that if you're not already a little depressed then this album will make you feel that way.

"colo(u)rs and the kids" has been the source of unsuspected crying while eating japanese food in public not one but two times so if that's how you get down then i highly recommend it

the rest is really cool, though i think too much of a mood record for me to really love love it. you've really gotta be in that sort of down-in-the-dumps-my-life-is-an-unpaid-mortgage mood in order to really feel this 100%. then again, i suppose that's the case for just about all kinds of slowcore - so as long as you meet all the genre prereqs, you should be fine (warnings you'll never have to read on a red house painters album: this guy has one or several bees in his bonnet). at one point i found out that something like five of these songs were written in one night and it sort of bothered me at the time and made me think "YEAH, you can tell because they sound so simple" but upon further investigation, that's just my nonexistent OCD talking. a good album if you like guitar music with a narcoleptic drummer.

also i haven't heard the original version of "moonshiner" but this one's just fine thanks.

i also wish that my first cat power album wasn't the greatest because i wouldn't have dismissed her as boring adult-contempo folk for so long. :/

Fucking amazing! I wish I had heard this earlier but am glad I finally got around to listening to her. I like PJ Harvey but this is even better, I'll definitely be checking out more of her because this is just great.

Chan Marshall's voice has something to it, tremblingly honest but still maintaining the distance and metallic hitch to it. Her brutal songs of love and character studies are sparse and detached but still can make one bawl like a child. _Moon Pix_ is her best release. Appending familiar noises like raindrops, doses of tinkling piano lines and spare guitars, even managing to make one dance track, it's clear that she's mastered her musical identity and polished it to a wistful sheen. The sadness in "Colors and the kids" is affecting but never obvious. "Cross bones style" sways to a dark groove. This is a mercilessly elegant effort.

this must be what lana del rey fans hear when they listen to her
