Some even include live personal training sessions and feel more like an actual class compared to apps.

    Best Overall Workout Mirror

    Tonal

    Tonal
    $3,995 at tonal.com
    Credit: Tonal
    Pros
    • Excellent resistance-based workouts
    • Easy music streaming
    • Compact design
    Cons
    • Looks like an exercise machine — not a mirror — when not in use
    • Device must be bolted into a wall

Backed by several celebrity investors including LeBron James, Steph Curry and Serena Williams, Tonal stands apart from the rest of the pack because it's so much more than a mirror. Tonal is a 24-inch interactive touch screen, with built-in weights and cables. It is a wall-mounted platform that contains both a screen and electromagnetic-based resistance equipment as well as arms that facilitate weightlifting. The magnet system emulates weightlifting as if you were in a gym lifting free weights off the floor. The machine senses your capabilities through AI technology and smart handles and adjusts the difficulty to your ability level as you perform.

In addition, the Tonal membership offers a wide range of classes such as strength training, cardio, HIIT, barre, yoga, meditation and breath work among others. There are also on-demand live workouts from celebrity trainer and P90x founder, Tony Horton among other trainers. Personal training, while not yet live, can be customized by time and fitness level. You can also use the Tonal app on your smartphone to plan out workouts without needing the device in front of you. “It’s clearly geared toward strength training, and on that note, it delivered superb results, though there’s a bit of a learning curve,” says Rachel Rothman, former chief technologist and executive technical director at the Good Housekeeping Institute.

Our testers gave points to the intuitive touchscreen display and the ease with which they could stream their own music to the machine’s onboard speakers. One tester reported, “Tonal completely changed my body for the better; it’s the only workout I do now.” Tonal is also more compact than most of the workout mirrors we reviewed, making it a good fit for smaller spaces. Although the adjustable arms with cables can be folded away when not in use, it still very much looks like an exercise machine, plus the frame has to be anchored to the wall much like a TV, which could be a factor for renters.

    Best Workout Mirror for Classes

    Lululemon Studio Mirror

    Lululemon Studio Mirror
    Credit: Lululemon
    Pros
    • Access to some of North America's top fitness classes
    • Two-way audio lets you talk with trainers
    • Sleek design
    Cons
    • Controlled by app, not touchscreen
    • No equipment included and many classes require weights and resistance bands

Launched in 2018, Mirror gave rise to this new category of workout equipment. Now owned by Lululemon and recently renamed the Lululemon Studio Mirror, it continues to be a leading innovator in the category. It now offers the largest variety of classes among our picks with 10,000+ options as well as personalized, one-on-one training for an extra fee. Lululemon has recently partnered with some of the industry’s most popular group fitness classes including AARMY, Y7 Studio, celebrity favorite DOGPOUND, Pure Barre, AKT and Rumble among others. All Lululemon Studio members are now able to stream classes from these partners on the Mirror, and discounts are also offered for in-person classes at the individual studios.

Our experts found the workout experience to be energizing, fun and extremely effective. For example, you can start by designing personalized weekly programs across a range of activities, from dance cardio to HIIT. Then, if you want to go next level, for an extra fee, you can hire a certified trainer for a private session. The two-way audio and video technology make it possible to receive expert feedback in real-time, including form corrections and motivation. “If you’re worried about privacy, the camera has a physical privacy cover for added peace of mind,” says Rothman.

In terms of aesthetics, the Mirror remains among the better-looking units we reviewed with a slim profile and sleek metal accents. One possible downside: The Mirror doesn’t have touchscreen controls, so you’ll need to control it via an app on your phone or tablet. The cost of the Mirror itself starts at $995, but you can upgarde to different packages that include Lululemon braded accessories like fitness bands, yoga mats, foam rollers and more.

    Credit: ProForm
    Pros
    • Equipment stores easily
    • iFIT membership works with other ProFit products
    • Works with Bluetooth headphones
    Cons
    • Heart rate monitor needs to be purchased separately
    • No live classes or personal training offered

Although we haven’t tested the ProForm Vue (yet!), we’ve tested ProForm equipment in the past and have been impressed. ProForm's take on a fitness mirror is a 22-inch interactive touchscreen that connects to the brand’s interactive personal training, known as iFIT. One iFIT membership works across ProFit’s interactive treadmills, ellipticals, bikes and more, so it’s a good deal if you plan on investing in multiple ProFit products, and you get a free 30-day trial with your purchase. The system comes with a 10-pound barbell and two 5-pound dumbbells that you can load up with up to four 2.5-pound weight plates throughout the guided workouts — all of which can be stored on the back of the mirror for easy storage.

Classes aren’t live, but they vary from strength training, yoga and HIIT classes that you can swipe through on the screen. Proper form is shown by the instructor that you can “mirror” during the workouts, and you can listen using the built-in speakers or connecting with Bluetooth headphones. You’ll also get additional stats like calories burned, time elapsed and heart rate, using the SmartBeat heart rate monitor that needs to be purchased separately.

    Best Workout Mirror for Weightlifting

    Tempo Studio

    Tempo Studio
    Now 43% Off
    Credit: Tempo
    Pros
    • Wide array of top-notch workout classes
    • Intuitive touchscreen controls and crisp picture quality
    Cons
    • More expensive than others
    • Larger in size than others

What sets Tempo apart is that it uses 3D technology and AI to help perfect your workouts and provide real-time feedback to help correct your form. The machine comes in an A-frame silhouette, much like an easel and rests on top of a cabinet that holds weights and other accessories. It is larger in size than others and requires adequate space.“The sleek and efficient design, effective workouts, top-quality equipment and artificial intelligence capabilities all provide for a complete smart home gym,” says lead tester Stefani Sassos, a registered dietitian and personal trainer and Deputy Director of the Good Housekeeping Institute Nutrition Lab.

Our team particularly liked Tempo's strength training classes, but also got a lot of out the HIIT, cardio, yoga, prenatal, boxing, mobility and muscle recovery content. The range of workout options remains one of Tempo’s top selling points, along with the fact that classes are both live and on-demand. Testers also found the touchscreen controls to be responsive and intuitive and the picture quality on the 42-inch screen exceptionally crisp. The mirror’s built-in storage compartment corrals the supplemental equipment including dumbbells, kettlebell, roller, mat and heart rate monitor.

Bottom line: Tempo is a great all-in-one workout mirror if you have the space and budget. The self-contained gym makes it a great choice to keep all your exercise equipment in one neat space.

    Best Workout Mirror for Families

    FORME Studio

    FORME Studio
    Pros
    • Concierge fitness service
    • Crisp, 4K screen resolution, two-way communication capabilities
    • Optional resistance cable arm attachments
    Cons
    • Pricey
    • Takes up more space than others

FORME Studio offers a wide variety of workouts across all fitness platforms including barre, meditation, family yoga, strength training and mobility for golfers among others. They also offer an exclusive partnership with Barry's Bootcamp so you can bring the Barry’s experience straight to your home with weight and tread classes. Members can also be paired with a personal fitness concierge who helps them create a custom plan based on their specific goals and coaches them through one-on-one training. Live 1:1 training is also offered for an additional cost. The 43-inch, 4k resolution touchscreen and two-way camera capabilities allow you to see three dimensions, which is especially useful for sessions with your trainer. It helps them to assess your form and motions more accurately to view your progress. Trainers also appear close to life-size which can be helpful to follow.

A new and exciting attachment, Studio with Lift, provides optional resistance cable arm attachments suitable for resistance training — although this almost doubles the price of the mirror. Another unique feature of this mirror is the ability to add a wooden barre attachment that provides a studio-like barre class experience. The mirror can be anchored to the wall or placed on the floor.

Celebrity trainer, Harley Pasternak oversees the fitness training program as the Chief Fitness Advisor to FORME. “FORME has some of the best instructors from LA, but more importantly, the programming was overseen by expert personal trainers and coaches to fit into a cohesive training plan," says Pasternak. "This means warm-ups and cool-downs before your live one-on-one sessions, but also great snackable content like my 'One Move a Day' program.” The mirror is also designed by award-winning product designer Yves Behar and acts as an elegant mirror when not in use. The music sound is great as well, thanks to the high-fidelity, rear-firing speakers. Testers reported that FORME “makes working out fun, competitive and you can go at your own pace. The classes are great, with amazing one-on-one ability.” Another tester exclaimed, “Great personal training and there are lots of classes by skill level and type of workout!”

    How we test workout mirrors

tester testing out mirror workouts for good housekeeping's best workout fitness mirrors

At the Good Housekeeping Institute Wellness Lab, we tested a number of the latest fitness mirrors available to consumers, applying the same rigorous testing methods used with other fitness products from stationary bikes to folding treadmills.

With these fitness mirrors, we took into consideration the number and scope of classes, display quality and screen suitability for live, on-demand and personal training sessions. Other factors reviewed included how engaging the instructors were, the production quality of the classes, the actual image quality of the screen and the sound quality of the speakers.

good housekeeping institute's rachel rothman testing mirror workouts for best fitness mirror workouts

In terms of evaluating workouts, we looked at effective sequencing, if there was a robust number of classes available, the variety for cross-training across different fitness platforms and adequate search filters for things like intensity and high to low impact levels. Session duration choices and genre were also important factors we considered, as were organizational partnerships with popular in-person studios.

Safety measures were reviewed and we also considered if the mirrors offered strength assessments and ample form assessments during live training classes.

How to choose the best at-home fitness mirror

    linebreak

✔️ Installation and footprint: A workout mirror is a serious piece of equipment, often measuring six feet tall and weighing 100+ pounds (not to mention bearing a four-figure price tag in some cases). Most manufacturers offer shipping and assembly, though some charge as much as $250 while others provide the service for free. A wall-mounted mirror has a smaller footprint than a freestanding unit, though the latter often includes some sort of storage compartment for free weights, yoga blocks, resistance bands and other accessories. Think about the additional floor space required, as you’ll need room around the mirror to do your workouts; also make sure you have adequate height clearance as the manufacturer instructs.

✔️ Setup: Many mirrors have a touchscreen interface that you use to create your initial profile. A couple of models we looked at didn't have a touchscreen, requiring you to download a separate app to get started and control the mirror. Our experts and testers alike generally preferred the more streamlined touchscreen experience, although fingerprints can be a distraction. They can easily be removed with a microfiber cloth, so keep one on hand if that bothers you.

✔️ Exercise content: While the mirror itself matters, you’re ultimately paying for the workout experience. Our experts considered the breadth of classes, which might include everything from HIIT and strength training to yoga and pilates. We also assessed the overall quality of the instructors. It’s important to choose a workout mirror that matches the kind of exercise you prefer. Note as well that some mirrors offer live training for a more personalized experience, while others are limited to pre-recorded classes. If you like to jam out while you exercise, pay attention to the music options. Some workout mirrors have native music programs, while others make it easy to stream your favorite playlists from your smartphone.

✔️ Pricing: Some workout mirrors have built-in storage to handle an array of accessories, which is great if you’re going for the total gym experience. Just know that you’re firmly in splurge territory with these all-inclusive machines, which can cost many times more than a typical yearly gym membership. Additionally, all mirrors charge a monthly subscription fee to access their live and on-demand classes. We classified price as the below:

    • Under $1,000: $
    • $1,000-$1,500: $$
    • $1,500-$2,500: $$$
    • $2,500-$3,500+: $$$$

How much space do you need near the mirror to work out?

    line break

This depends on which workout mirror you purchase, according to Sassos. Many don’t need much more space than a workout mat. “Since workout mirrors can be freestanding or securely mounted onto a wall, they can be a great way to save space in your home gym or workout corner,” Sassos says. “They are also quite stylish and look great in your home even when not in use.”

Smart workout mirrors that might require more space include ones that use AI or specific software to track your movement or those with added elements such as arms and a bench. Most brands will provide guidelines on the required space needed for exercising with the mirror.

Can you still see yourself in a workout mirror?

    line break

Most of the time, yes! Although the reflection won’t be as clear as an actual mirror, you can still see a faint reflection of yourself to help you check your form throughout the workout while still being able to see your instructor demonstrating, says Sassos.

    Are fitness mirrors worth it?

    line break

Using a fitness mirror is a great way to get a workout in if you are unable to get to the gym or feel uncomfortable exercising in front of others. They allow you to observe a fitness trainer or class instructor and yourself at the same time so you can emulate what they are doing and ensure your form is spot-on. Plus, you’ll get the addition of visual metrics as well as connect with other equipment and apps, depending on the workout mirror.

“Best of all, they provide a more immersive workout experience in the comfort of your own home as opposed to having to squint to follow a workout class on your small smartphone or tablet,” Sassos adds. Remember: The best workout machine is the one you will use, and these provide so many different options for every exercise level and age, they may be able to replace all your other fitness equipment. From yoga to strength training to barre and cardio, workout mirrors offer myriad ways to up your personal fitness game.

How do you clean a workout mirror?

    line break

Always follow the care instructions in the user manual, but most will require a glass cleaner like Hope’s Perfect Glass Cleaner Spray. In our tests, it cleaned without streaking and didn’t require a lot of buffing or wiping, which is exactly what you want when handling a piece of tech.

Carolyn Forté, Executive Director of the Home Care & Cleaning Lab at the Good Housekeeping Institute, recommends spraying a cloth and wiping down the mirror rather than spraying it directly. Afterward, give it a wipe with a soft dry cloth to shine and remove any telltale marks. “You don’t want any cleaner seeping behind the mirror to damage it,” she says.
