Meg Bennett’s legacy
Bennett got her start as a stage actress, appearing on Broadway in the original production of “Grease” and off-Broadway in “Godspell.” She began her soap opera career with a few episodes of “Search for Tomorrow” in the mid-1970s, but it was on “The Young and the Restless” where she began to make her mark. She played Julia Newman for six years beginning in 1980, returning for cameo appearances over the years, most recently in 2020.
Though Bennett became known to soap opera audiences for her onscreen talent, it was as a daytime drama writer that she was most successful. She began writing while still acting on “The Young and the Restless” as her talents as a script doctor became obvious. She was hired as a writer, continuing to play Newman even as she penned scripts. Bennett was nominated for her first Daytime Emmy Award in 1986 as a writer for “The Young and the Restless.”
Bennett went on to both act and write for several other soap operas. She joined the cast of “Santa Barbara” in 1989 as Megan Richardson; in 1991 and 1992, she won for her screenwriting on the show. As a writer for “General Hospital,” Bennett won a Daytime Emmy and several Writers Guild of America Awards. She also appeared on “General Hospital” in a brief but memorable role as villainess Allegra Montenegro. Bennett also wrote for “The Bold and the Beautiful,” “Generations,” and “Sunset Beach.”
