Kushal Tandon is making a comeback to television after six years with Barsaatein on Sony TV. The actor will be paired opposite Shivangi Joshi in this Balaji Telefilms show. He shared that the gap happened as he was busy with web shows and a digital film, and also working on his restaurant. “Then Covid happened and a few years just passed by,” he added. Kushal shared that when Ekta Kapoor told him that she would only make this show if he says yes, he jumped to the offer. “She was like it’s a character tailor-made for you, and I want only you. It felt so good that people have so much faith in you and want to make projects with you in mind,” he told indianexpress.com.

Ever since the trailer of the show dropped, fans have been pointing out how Kushal only does these ‘angry young man’ roles. Laughing about the buzz on social media, Kushal said that people do look at him in a certain way, and thus may approach him for such roles. “But it’s not that I want to do only these urban characters. Honestly, I actually want to do something rugged, like Mirzapur. I come from Lucknow and have seen the culture and language. I hope something like that comes my way. That’s something really on my wish list. I am working on starting my own production house soon, and if others do not offer me, I will create something for myself.”

Talking about his character Reyansh in Barsaatein, Kushal Tandon said he is very close to him. “He is a non-conformist and non-feminist. He is sharp and really good at his job. Because of a past story, he has trust issues and also build a wall around himself, not letting anyone come close to him. Reyansh heads a team of journalists and is fierce and bold. He takes on ministers and businessmen, without any fears, even if that means his business gets suffered.”

Most celebrities share a love-hate relationship with the media but Kushal claims that he’s never had a sour experience. He added that since he doesn’t go to events or parties, he doesn’t interact much with them. “I get to meet you guys only during promotions of my projects. Right now, with the paps involved, there is an added proximity. But we all know how they are called by celebs themselves. I have never called anyone, never hired a PR. I actually find it funny,” the actor said. However, there have been a number of negative reports of him throwing tantrums and attitude around. “If someone feels good about writing such things, good for them. But when they actually meet me, they too are surprised because I am nothing like what’s reported about me. I don’t just care about what one thinks about me. Until and unless it’s too derogatory, I am okay. And thankfully that hasn’t happened yet.”

Kushal Tandon entered the entertainment industry at the age of 19, after winning Mr India. After modelling for a couple of years, he went to LA to learn acting and soon bagged Ek Hazaron Mein Meri Behna Hai. The actor shared that he feels humbled by how people continue to love him even when he is not regularly on TV. He also added even when there’s a sea of options around, people are hooked on to the small screen for content. “Priority wise TV remains on the top. I think it’s even bigger than OTT,” he shared.

While he has hopes of making the jump to the big screen, Kushal said that he is waiting for a good offer that’s worth the wait. “If I just wanted to be in films, I would have done it long back, even before Beyhadh. But until and unless it’s a really good script, I don’t want to do it. I am happy being an A-lister on TV and doing some web shows in between than doing a film for the sake of it. I have a lot of good work behind me and I want to make sure that I do something interesting and impactful even in films too.”

Festive offer

Starting July 10, Barsatein – Mausam Pyaar Ka will air Monday-Friday at 8 pm.
