I didn't know Staton until I got this CD. She had two real hits ("Broadway" and "The Late, Late Show"), but this CD also has her better-than-pleasant reads on "A Foggy Day," ""Give Me the Simple Life," "You Showed Me the Way" and some other tunes. Nothing that will rock your socks, but a very sweet collection.
I fell in love with [and to the sound of] Dakota Staton's singing when I was a teenager, back in the 50s. She was and is one of the freshest stylists in the pop-jazz category. I'd long ago lost those old LPs that I nearly wore out back then, but one day, while listening to the radio on a road trip, I accidentally caught Dakota singing "The Late, Late Show" and I was smitten all over again. I, of course, looked her up online and found out that Amazon.com, of course, had the CDs available. I am so happy to have Dakota singing to me again - and she's as fresh and vibrant as ever!
This cd is one you must have known about, as Dakota Staton was one of the best in her time. I love her unique form of singing, I myself could listen to her sing misty all day. If you are a Dakota Staton fan like myself get this one, amazon has a large selection of her hard to find songs.
This was Dakota's best, and best selling, album. I discovered Dakota Staton 25 years ago when I came across this in the 33 rpm vinyl version at the Goodwill. That was my lucky day! She is delightful and should be much, much better known. But beware: the cover selection -- "The Late Late Show" -- is just so damn GOOD you'll hear it in your head forever.
ONE OF THE BEST FEMALE BLUES SINGING JAZZ ARTIST OF OUR TIME.. MUCH LIKE DINAH WASHING TO BUT IN A CLASS OF HER OWN. DEEP SEXY SOFT DELIVERY THAT SWOONS YOU AKA A FEMALE NAT KING COLE
I had never listened to Dakota Staton before though I have known about her for a long time, and I was surprised to find how good she was. Her voice, rhytm, phrasing and style are all as good as those of more famous singers. Anyone who cares for jazz singing should give this CD a try, especially as it is so ridiculously inexpensive.
Best female vocal jazz album ever? Possibly. Gorgeous, swinging, beefy music with incredible vocals. Best version of My Funny Valentine I've ever heard. Thoroughly recommended.
