Why did so many Albanians move to the Bronx?

Ask Albanians

There are so many Albanians in the Bronx. Does anyone know a specific reason why a lot of Albanians specifically moved to this borough?

Many of albanians living from the Bronx are from Kosova/Montenegro, and Shkodra region, while the rest are mostly in Queens.

  1. Cheap. Same reasons many Albanians are in Queens as well

  2. There was already an albanian community there, since the early 1900

The main reason Boston, Detroit, and NYC have so many albanians were because they were ports of entry close to europe (Boston and NYC), and they always have had an Albanian community, since the late 1800s and early 1900s.

Detroit has many Albanians today, mainly due to the car industry revolution in the early 1900s. Many fresh immigrants moved there in the 1908 -1930's car industry boom and formed communities. It was very common for immigrants to move to USA and work there and bring some money home (especially in the Korca/south region).

After WW2 and communist areas, immigration mostly stopped, but in the 1990-2000 wave, a lot of people initially moved into places where they had some long relative to help them out. Cousins help cousins, and those clusters grew again.

That's why you see so many Albanians in NYC, Boston and Detroit, and not in places like Atlanta or the south.

Ater WW2, many of those immigrants moved/fanned out to nearby states like NJ and Connecticut, so you will find many folks with albo origins there.

TLDR: They have always been there since the late 1800s, early 1900s, mostly intermingled with Italian communities. The fresh new wave moved to the same places.

Ps 1. One of the oldest albanian churches in boston was formed in 1908: http://www.saintgeorgecathedral.com/history.html

Ps. 2. Church based communities helped the early 90's immigrants (post communism) with the moving transition period. Hence they attracted a new cluster of Albanians.

Thank you! Your answer was very thorough and helpful.

We usually follow each other. The first one to get there probably had a spare room and welcomed the beginning of the rest.

Because they wanted to be close to AOC, at least that's what my friend Reginna told me.

Are you being sarcastic? Because most Albanians, to my understanding, are very skeptical of socialism, liberals, etc.

99% of albanians don't like her.... she looks/feels straight out of a communist book, and we have been burned badly/suffered a lot by that ideology. Most Albanians are not in her district though.

Yeah, that's what I thought. I went to school with a lot of Albanians and their families were extremely unsupportive of socialism and all that.

The only left-leaning Albanians I've ever met were teens who got their news off Instagram and wanted to rebel against their conservative parents.

Which is ironic considering how much Biden has done for Albanians. He has always been a huge supporter and not to mention: Without him, there would not have been nato support.

So yea, any Albanian who voted for Trump can go suck a fat one.

Do you know that Biden and AOC are actually opponents inside the democratic party? They are literal opposing factions. One is moderate, the other is far left/socialist/almost commie stuff.

You can support the Democratic party and Biden, and still not like AOC and her horde of 'woke' socialist pals.

Most Albanians like Biden and the Democratic party, but don't like straight out socialist crap from aoc.

Don't forget Communist apologists and Albanians with Stockholm Syndrome.

Oh yeah, that's true too.

A lot of Albanian refugees are from Kosova. They fled during the late 1990s due to the war caused by Serbian Milatry attempts at genocide.
