This is what love is! Platonic? Romantic? Both? Well, the love is so deep it transcends labels. A love that no matter how much pain the other caused you, you still look for them, find them, and accept them when they're the one to show up first. That's the love Ansheng and Qiyue have for each other. That's what soulmatism is!
*Both Zhou Dongyu and Ma Sichun's performances are so good that it made me cry.
Before gifting us with the magnificent Better Days, Derek Tsang gave us a lovely and poignant story about friendship. A story that is less and less told and replaced by romantic stories, which I must admit I was worried this would turn out to be.
Our two leads are fantastic, and the way their two storylines converge and diverge while at the same time this ends up enriching the other is great, producing so many moments that will make you grin and weep at the same time.
The film makes extensive use of voice over, and I like Derek's decision to shoot things in such a fluid way, which helps to give the impression that you are watching memories unfold.
All in all, a simple yet effective love story about two souls that end up becoming one.

chapter one,
you get to find a friend whose life is almost the opposite the one you are made to live with. you love them, they love you, and you are pitied enough to have more food in your plate.
chapter two,
you’re growing into a friendship so much that it shivers you to find out they have a lover now, just when you were convinced they are the only one that loves you entirely, and regardless, you still love them and are willing to sacrifice for them: you leave.
chapter three,
you’re leading two entirely separate lives with the same heartbeats, trying to connect, trying to communicate. young adulthood, it hits you, right? what will become of me? how…
a tear-jerking drama about friendship. i hate that this film is so het; should have been pure sapphic. very kdrama-ish. ending can be lowkey predictable, but it still delivers especially with that acting performance; it really melted my heart. i thank seulgi for recommending this film ;-;
there was never an instance where i watched a certain film with zhou dongyu in it that i never got too fragile with my emotions. from the very moment she starts shedding one tear, you know it's the moment you're about to lose your shit. you suddenly find yourself crying along with her.
My 2nd viewing.
I love this movie! So glad I was able to rewatch this without any subtitle issues (like with the 1st viewing). I found myself getting even more swept up and lost in the adventure of this compelling, delightful, and sad love story this time around.
Much of my thoughts expressed in my initial review still applies, so I'll more or less recycle some of them here.
I really dug the complicated relationship dynamics between Ansheng (Zhou Dongyu) and Qiyue (Ma Sichun). Both Dongyu and Sichun give tremendous performances. In particular, I really feel like Dongyu delivers a standout performance with her display of unbelievable range and mesmerizing charisma.
Among other things, I loved how the story spans…
this dumb bitch (me) truly thought they were going to watch a chessy ass sapphic romcom (for some reason? maybe because of the movie poster? i have no idea dawg i was watching this with my gf even) and here i found myself crying my eyes out about losing friends and shit...
in all seriousness, i wasn't even mad about feeling like 'queer-baited'. this was bittersweet and real. just like what you might feel when you part paths with a close friend. haha....
it really do be like that.
"No matter what path a girl chooses, she will suffer"
This movie was beautiful and heartbreaking, follows closely two women whose friendship spans years with multiple misunderstandings but ultimately choosing each other in the end (even in death she was kept on, she was survived by a daughter and a legacy imagined by what could just be guilt but is still pure love)
There was a man and he got in between them but they have always chosen each other. Enjoyed it immensely, there's so much to unpack here and the story just unfolds beautifully on the ambition to have a free spirit and live a life where you are truly loved (well, they'll always have each other)
Don't go flooding my nostalgia. Sometimes you found yourself in a triangle. Sometimes you wanted a nice emotional density of a competently made young adult novel (though with the tendencies for melodrama and conflict going down a path that one can easily predict). Maybe this was still a time you didn't understand everything, lacking wisdom amidst optimistic naivety. You still wished it came in to say hello daily. "Did you see the feathers that rained down yesterday?" the inner thoughts were the ones to pick one feather on the ground as your pencil, with black ink ready by the side of the table. As you started to write down the memories of Autumn and Spring, I suddenly remembered that fateful day, my crumbling heart remained steady in order to connect with the shadow of your trail. Holding up and in time against the frozen dragonfly before then.
