The movie may be a downer, but it packs an emotional wallop. Some fine acting on display here.

Kayla Kumari Upadhyaya Autostraddle Even as it jumps between 20th century decades, The Hours is intensely, almost upsettingly linear. A lot like life. Mar 20, 2024 Full Review Charlotte O'Sullivan Independent (UK) It's a must-see. Mainstream epics routinely privilege the father-son bond... In The Hours, patriarchs barely figure, and the only phallic weapon on display is Virginia's pen. Nov 15, 2017 Full Review Nell Minow Common Sense Media Smart, thoughtful movie for older teens and up. Rated: 5/5 Dec 28, 2010 Full Review Carla Monfort Espinof Few movies depict depression as well, it's subtle and truthful, without overloading it dramatically even though it touches upon suicide and other complicated subjects... [Full review in Spanish] Rated: 4/5 Aug 15, 2022 Full Review David Reddish Queerty Loaded with rich dialogue, magnificent performances and a delicate score by Philip Glass, The Hours reminds us how movies can touch and reflect our lives. For the characters that embrace love and truth, life offers joy and hope. Andrew B Unbelievably pretentious and utterly baffling the critical praise it received at the time of its release. I put it down to there being virtually no intellectually stimulating/valuable American movies being made at the time. In a world of super hero Hollywood blockbusters, this must have seemed like a breath of fresh air to more discerning filmgoers. Alas now I believe it needs to be rewatched and re-reviewed. The overacting, the offensively bad nosejob on Kidman as Woolf, the absolute banality of it all. 2.5 stars is about right, if not generous. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 05/26/24 Full Review Lynne J I absolutely loved this from start to finish. Brilliant acting Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 05/25/24 Full Review Casey L A movie about people’s mental struggles, despair and hope. Great acting and story telling Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/19/24 Full Review Leaburn O A clever telling of Mrs Dalloway from author and across succeeding generations. Solid acting all round. Watched on DVD. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/20/24 Full Review Jeff M As I begin to dive into the movies of the 2000s, I decided to start with my favorite movie of that decade and my #2 film of all time. This is cinema as art, a miraculous adaptation of what seemed like an unfilmable novel. The lives of three characters in three different generations are hypnotically blended not only physically, but emotionally and even spiritually. It's one of those very rare films that hits me on different levels every time I watch it, and I notice totally new details and nuances that often make me re-evaluate everything I've seen before. This most recent viewing made me concentrate on the internal grief and subsequent guilt of not being able to love in the way others want and need. And the characters often relay more in their silences than in their words. It's a mesmerizing masterpiece that is inching closer and closer to becoming my #1 film of all time. The ensemble cast is an embarrassment of riches, Phillip Glass' score is almost another character in the film and David Hare's screenplay is flawless. I've often referred to this movie as "depression porn" and it's going to be a tough and possibly even tedious sit for many. But for me, this is a prime example of why I love movies. If you love to read, I'd also recommend you check out Michael Cunningham's source material - I've read it three times. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/26/24 Full Review Kyle J Disjointed in Meryl Streep and her samey expressions, acting style and nasal voice. Film combining 3 separate stories exploring sex, relationships, truth, repercussions of a parent leaving a family, repetitive generational behaviour, depression, suicide...life...choices...all very interesting but never terribly deep. I wanted to know more about Virginia Woolf and each of the separate scenarios and how they hung together needed more thought, but I appreciate a film trying to do something different. But why? The point of which? Rated 2 out of 5 stars 10/18/23 Full Review Read all reviews
