Summary

  • The LEGO Harry Potter sets are intricate playsets with over 4000 pieces, capturing the magic of the movie franchise.
  • Larger sets like Hogwarts Castle offer detailed recreations of iconic locations and scenes from the series.
  • Collectors can enjoy building sets like Diagon Alley and Hogwarts Express, showcasing memorable moments and characters.

The largest LEGO Harry Potter sets include some of the most intricate and enjoyable playsets made by the building block company, and some sets even exceed 4000 pieces. The toy line launched in 2001, alongside the release of the first film in the Harry Potter movie franchise, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, and for the most part has matched that release schedule. Sets continue to be made, either for new places and sequences from the movies or as reboots of popular sets, adding all the detail and updates that two decades of LEGO have produced.

While many LEGO enthusiasts have found that the LEGO midi-scaled style of sets is up their alley, there are still plenty of people in the "the bigger, the better" camp when it comes to creating worlds from their favorite magical movie series. Harry Potter in particular is positioned perfectly to have some enormous sets. The locations in Harry Potter are as memorable as the story and characters, with castles, neighborhoods, and giant carriages par for the course. These ideas and more make for some impressively sized LEGO sets that promise plenty of fun building and playing.

The Hogwarts Chamber of Secrets (76389) set is a three-piece set with a small, medium, and large building that depicts Harry's journey to the Chamber of Secrets in the second movie. This 1176-piece set comes with 11 mini-figures, including a Nearly Headless Nick figure that glows in the dark. It also includes an exclusive golden Voldemort minifigure to celebrate 20 years of magic with LEGO Harry Potter. Scenes from the end of the Chamber of Secrets can be recreated thanks to the large Basilisk with rotatable joints.

There are plenty of hidden secrets, including six random wizard card tiles, of which 16 can be collected, a hidden trap slide that can send characters plummeting, and a movable stone face to release the Basilisk. The Great Hall even allows for the dueling club scene to be recreated, complete with tables that can fling hexed characters out of the set.

Hogwarts Castle (4842) is the 4th edition of the Hogwarts Castle sets and was released in 2010, but it has since been discontinued. Unlike previous incarnations, this Hogwarts Castle is not specific to any one movie and instead takes design inspiration from all the movies up to that point, which includes everything before The Deathly Hallows: Part 1. The set contains 11 minifigures: eight named characters, two Dementors, and one cat: Mrs. Norris.

The versions of Professor Snape, Professor McGonagall, Professor Dumbledore, Professor Flitwick, Filch, and the printed version of Filch's cat, Mrs. Norris, are all exclusive to this set. The Astronomy Tower, Dumbledore's Office, the Great Hall, and the Common Rooms (only Slytherin and Griffindor) are all included in exquisite detail. The set is no longer available from LEGO and must be purchased from a third-party vendor.
