When does Neighbours finish? Date of last episode, why soap is ending and how long it’s been on air

Channel 5 has announced it will be dropping the long-running show

Neighbours will come to a close this summer after 37 years of air-time.

The well-loved soap was axed from screens after production company Fremantle Media struggled to find a new home following Channel 5’s decision to drop the show.

The tea-time drama launched the careers of stars including Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan and Margot Robbie.

It has been reported that both Kylie Minogue and Jason Donavan will be returning to film the final episode after 30 years away. The pair will reunite as the much-loved characters Charlene and Scott for the show’s emotional finale.

There was widespread delight after the show’s official Twitter account shared a message from executive producer Jason Herbison which said: “Scott and Charlene are the ultimate Neighbours couple and it would not feel right to end the show without them.”

Why is’ Neighbours’ ending?

Channel 5 announced that it would be dropping Neighbours from its schedule in order to free up more funding for original UK dramas.

A spokesperson for the channel said: “Neighbours will no longer air on Channel 5 beyond this summer.

“It’s been a much-loved part of our schedule for more than a decade, and we’d like to thank the cast, Fremantle and all of the production team for their fantastic work on this iconic series.

“We’d also of course like to thank the fans for their loyal support of Neighbours across the years.

“We recognise that there will be disappointment about this decision, however, our current focus is on increasing our investment in original UK drama, which has strong appeal for our viewers.”

When did ‘Neighbours’ start?

The soap launched in 1985 and is the longest-running drama in Australia. Despite this, it has always been more popular in the UK than down under.

Neighbours draws more than one million viewers in the UK, while its Australian broadcast is shown on a digital channel with a smaller audience.

Neighbours was shown on BBC One until 2008 when it moved to Channel 5.

Jason Donovan, who played Scott Robinson from 1986 to 1989, tweeted: “@neighbours changed the Australian television landscape. It launched many careers over decades including mine.”
