Once you sink into this altered soundscape, it can take you deep. Solo piano in "just intonation" - which to our modern musical ears may sound discordant, but is perhaps more in tune with the cosmos? At times in the course of this 1&1/2 hours of piano, I find the sound a bit gloomy and oppressive, but at its best this can take you to some beautiful new places. I especially dig "Riding the Westerlys" which rocks out in a most sublime fashion, reminding me a bit of a Velvet Underground-like droning rock piece, say "sister ray" for piano. "Premonition Rag" swirls along with a lot of nice ascending/descending rolls. "The Magic Knot Waltz" also has some beautiful ascending/descending rolls, with a sparser approach. Seems to be mostly a modal affair (as far as I can tell), and many pieces favor a repetitive rhythmic approach (no surprise), but there are some nice more drifting melodic pieces with more spaciousness (like #1)Published
