The ageless trumpeter Doc Cheatham (who was 78 years old at the time of this studio session) is remarkable. Most trumpeters fade when they hit their sixties, but he continues to gain in strength, hitting reasonably high notes with confidence and power. His melodic invention also continues to develop. This quartet session with the late pianist Dick Wellstood is one of his finest recordings. Cheatham is in particularly top form on "Deed I Do," "Swing That Music," and "I Double Dare You," but all nine selections (which also feature his charming whispered vocals) are quite enjoyable.
