Biography

Eleanor was the daughter of Hugh Luttrell and his first wife Margaret Hill.[1][2] [3][4][5] Her birth date is uncertain. She may have been born at Dunster, Somerset, where her father had his main lands.[1][2]

Before 1520 she became the first wife of Roger Yorke, son Walter Yorke and Welthian (Yarde) Yorke.[1][2] They had five children (the children are all named as siblings in a lawsuit of 1544-1547 relating to their inheritance, which stated that of the sons only Thomas was still alive)[6]

Eleanor's death date is not known, but her husband remarried, his second wife being Margaret, widow of Henry Melbourne (who died in 1518) and Anthony Erneley (who died on 30 November 1530).[1][2]

Research Notes

Marlyn Lewis, citing Richardson's entry for Eleanor in Royal Ancestry and Magna Carta Ancestry, says that Eleanor Luttrell died after 30 November 1530 at Somersetshire, England.[8] Richardson does not give a date or location for Eleanor's death. The 30 November 1530 death date given by Richardson is for Anthony Erneley, the second husband of Roger Yorke's second wife.[1][2]

Magna Carta Project

This profile was re-reviewed for the Magna Carta Project by Michael Cayley on 9 January 2022.
Eleanor appears in Magna Carta Ancestry in a Richardson-documented trail from Gateway Ancestor Percival Lowell to Magna Carta Surety Baron Robert de Vere (vol. III, pages 60-64 LOWELL). This trail, as well as another trail to surety baron Saher de Quincy, have been re-reviewed, finishing in January 2022. The trails are set out in the Magna Carta Trails section of Christian Percival's profile.
See Base Camp for more information about Magna Carta trails. See the project's glossary for project-specific terms, such as a "badged trail".

Hi Magna Carta

Any idea what source Douglas Richardson is citing for the children of Eleanor Luttrell? I've found evidence for son Thomas, and daughters Elizabeth and Phillippe, but not for the other two sons Andrew and William. I've also seen reference to a son Philip, who is not mentioned by Richardson, but he might be the son of Roger Yorke, with his second wife. See this abstract of document in National Archives https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C7495565

Richardson has the same children/spouses as in bio in Royal Ancestry, volume III, p 647, LOWELL 13, 14 & Magna Carta Ancestry, volume III, p 63, LOWELL 12, 13 (the first entry is for Eleanor Yorke, the second for Elizabeth Luttrell). 2nd wife Margaret is listed, but no children named. Even with a magnifying glass, my eyes aren't up to the fine print tonight. I did see an entry that seems to be source for Andrew:
  • St. George & Lennard Vis. of Cornwall 1620 (H.S.P. 9) (1874): 269-70 (York ped.: "Rich Yorke of Wellington in Com. Som'set = Da. of Sr Andrew Lutterell de Dunster").

update - sorry... something about Andrew Lutterell would not be a source for their son Andrew Yorke. Don't know what I was thinking!

I can find nothing in the sources Richardson gives that are publicly viewable on the web. He cites the following sources that are not publicly accessible as far as I can see, and the source for Andrew and William may be in one of them:

- NEHGR 157 (2003) pp.309-319

- Baker, Reports of Cases from the Time of Henry VIII, vol. 1, Selden Society 120 (2003), pp. xxxvi-xxxviii, 87, 89-245 and vol. 2, Selden Society 121 (2004), pp. 294, 296 and 328

- Abstract of IPM - Roger Yorke, FHL microfilm 917256

As an aside, this profile needs an overhaul to bring it up to Magna Carta Project current standards. On a quick glance, some Richardson references are not quite right, and some of what Richardson says may have been misread. I do not have time for this at present, and it does not affect the question about children. The profile is on the Project's very long todo list: if anyone wants to improve it before a Project member gets round to it, please do.

Chancery Proceedings C 1/1171/49. The suit of Thomas Yorke, Elizabeth and Eleanor Percival, Philippa and Richard parker against Philp Yorke, their uncle, in which it is stated that siblings Andrew Yorke and William Yorke were to share in their father's inheritance, but that they died without issue before the suit was filed.
