I am a 6 year man at UDJ, meaning I started my journey with UDJ in the Academy. During those years I experienced tremendous growth, both academically and socially. UDJ promotes an environment that fosters academic success. The curriculum is tough but there are many resources available for extra help. I am proud of what I have been able to accomplish. Socially, I have formed several friendships that I intend to maintain well beyond my high school career.
My son attended son there for over 3 years and for the first two years, we were happy there. When the new administration came in, changes to the culture of the school as well as the disciplinary measures were no longer effective. Instead of addressing problems, they would downplay them. And if too hard to do that, then just remove anything bothersome (aka expel your kid)... I used to adore this school, but not any more... Maybe a change in the administration in the future will bring this historical institution back to its glory days.
As a black student, it wasn’t easy for
me to fit in, but I eventually did because there was a sense of togetherness and diversity. I feel at home and safe in this school. My worst experiences are the few racist encounters I have, and the lack of diverse food options.
