France: Public sector employees to stage nationwide strike June 1-30 /update 1

Public sector employees to strike across France June 1-30; business, transport, public services disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

Public sector workers represented by the labor federations Solidaires Unitaires Democratiques (SUD) and Confederation Generale du Travail (CGT) plan to strike nationwide June 1-30. The purpose of the labor action is to protest recent public services reforms and demand increased salaries. Union officials assert that the work stoppage will encompass public services at the national and territorial level, as well as the public health sector, government-owned or -funded companies, and public servants assigned to private educational institutions.

Unless averted, the strike will probably cause significant disruptions to the operation of national and local government administrative offices, public healthcare facilities, public rail and bus transport, airports, and general municipal services. The CGT has specifically called for a healthcare strike on June 7.

Although organizers have as yet announced no specific plans for related demonstrations, striking workers could stage protest marches or rallies as part of the action. Demonstrations are particularly likely around June 12 and 19 when France will be holding national legislative elections. Police will likely deploy to monitor any such gatherings that may materialize. Large crowds and associated security measures, including road closures and movement restrictions, will likely result in localized transport disruptions. Isolated clashes between police and protesters cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Confirm all business appointments with national and local government offices, as well as government-owned companies, for the duration of the strike Check public transport schedules and local traffic conditions for disruptions before beginning journeys; allow extra time for travel and consider alternative means of transport if necessary. Avoid all demonstrations as a routine precaution and leave the area at the first sign of a security disturbance.
