Jindrich Matyas Thurn (24 February 1567 – 26 January 1640) was a Bohemian Protestant nobleman.
Biography[]
Jindrich Matyas Thurn was born in Lipnice nad Sazavou, Bohemia in 1567 to a Protestant noble family. In 1592, he joined the army of the Holy Roman Empire and fought against the Ottoman Turks in the Long Turkish War, and he was named burgrave of Karlstejn Castle. In 1618, he emerged as a major leader of the Bohemian Revolt against the intolerant Catholic Habsburgs, taking command of the national army on 23 May 1618. After his defeat at the Battle of White Mountain, he was forced to flee into exile, serving as a Swedish diplomat and soldier. In 1626, he became the Lieutenant-General in command of a Swedish army in Silesia, and he was defeated by Albrecht von Wallenstein at Steinau in Saxony in 1633 before retiring to his estate near Parnu, where he died in 1640.
