The letter 'M' has many connotations. In James Bond, it's the codename for the head of the secret service. In physics, it represents magnetisation. It's also the number 1,000 in Roman numerals. For Bayern fans, it's inextricably linked with Jamal Musiala.
Hoodwinking opposition defences and scoring for fun, the 19-year-old's 'M' goal celebration has become such a common sight this season that he can no longer be considered a secret weapon. In the 2-0 win over Schalke, the majestic talent landed a significant milestone as the youngest Bayern player to reach 100 competitive appearances.
Musiala dazzles against Schalke
Musiala has some 27 goals and 15 assists to show for his first 100 games in a Bayern shirt. On Matchday 15 at Schalke, in-form duo Serge Gnabry (38') and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting (52') were the beneficiaries of the Germany international's latest star turn.
His back-heeled assist for Gnabry was Magic Musiala in a nutshell. Or, as Bayern legend Lothar Matthäus enthused after the final whistle: "Hollywood!" Less 'Bambi' - as he's affectionaly known in the Bayern camp - and more apex predator, the hunt for silverware and personal bests is on.
Musiala in numbers
With six assists, Musiala is Bayern's top provider this season. Throw in nine strikes of his own, and that's a direct hand in 15 goals - more than any player in Germany in 2022/23. What's more, 12 goals in all competitions is a continental high among teenagers currently operating in Europe's top five leagues, while his 21 goal involvements in 22 competitive games (12 goals and nine assists) is as many as he managed across his first 78 appearances for FC Bayern. Nagelsmann: He's got so much talent
"He's had a magnificent first half of the season and will hopefully continue in the same vein at the World Cup and in the second half of the campaign," said Bayern head Julian Nagelsmann of his super talent. "He's also had some lucky breaks with the ball. He's got such lively feet, the ball just falls for him. He's got so much talent."
"He's a very important player, especially in the one-on-ones in the final third," added captain Manuel Neuer.
Musiala has also added another string to his bow. Up until the hour mark at Schalke, he was playing more as a No.6 in central midfield. His 41st-minute challenge on Kenan Karaman underlined his development. He can attack, and defend.
After Schalke comes the World Cup
Musiala almost capped his brilliant display with a goal of his own. However, after a trademark dribble, the whistle sounded for an offside decision that put his 'M' hand celebration on ice.
M for milestone, M for matchwinner, M for Musiala. Suffice to say Germany fans would welcome a few more gestures like that at the upcoming World Cup.
