Trial Date Set Between Kelly Clarkson & Her Ex-Husband Brandon Blackstock

Kelly Clarkson is going to trial against her ex-husband, Brandon Blackstock, this summer.

According to a report from Rolling Stone, Clarkson and Blackstock have a court date set for August 27. The trial is expected to last at least five days.

A Los Angeles County Judge detailed what will be discussed during the trial. As Rolling Stone explained:

The trial will focus solely on whether Blackstock violated the law when he procured deals for Clarkson such as her judging gig on NBC’s The Voice and then paid himself related commissions. A California Labor Commissioner first ruled on the dispute last November, largely siding with Clarkson and awarding her $2.6 million. Blackstock appealed the ruling last December, setting the stage for the so-called ‘de novo’ trial in state court, meaning a fresh trial starting from the beginning.”

Blackstock’s lawyers previously indicated their intentions to question Clarkson over her personal finances. They said Blackstock wants to “confirm” that he put his commission fees toward their joint marital expenses and funded Clarkson’s lifestyle.

But Judge Wendy Chang rejected Blackstock’s request. She said, “We will litigate whether there was a violation of the labor code only. Any questions as to earnings and damages, all of that will come after.

Kelly Clarkson & Brandon Blackstock’s Lawyers Speak

Lawyers for both parties addressed the ongoing legal battle between the couple

If we win everything at de novo [in August], they don’t even get a trial. They have no right to anything. There would be no management agreement, and they get no commissions,” said Clarkson’s lawyer Ed McPherson.

Blackstock’s lawyer, Bryan Freedman, previously told Rolling Stone:

It is morally, ethically and legally wrong to attempt to get monies back from your ex-husband who not only helped her as her manager but who used those earnings on their children and Kelly and Brandon’s lifestyle during the marriage.”

The Timeline Of Kelly & Brandon’s Split…

Kelly Clarkson and Brandon Blackstock married on October 20, 2013, at Blackberry Farm in Tennessee. They welcomed their first child, a daughter named River Rose, in June 2014. Their second child, a son named Remington Alexander, joined their family in April 2016. Blackstock has an older son and daughter from his previous marriage.

Clarkson filed for divorce from Blackstock in 2020, citing irreconcilable differences. Their divorce was finalized in March 2022.

The pair have been involved in a series of legal battles since Clarkson filed for divorce. In November 2023, Blackstock was ordered to pay her $2.6 million in improper management fees.

Clarkson recently filed a new lawsuit against her ex, seeking reimbursement for “commissions, fees, profits, advances, producing fees, or other monies.” Blackstock responded to the suit, denying “each and every” allegation made against him.
