- Pradeep Sasidaran2 contributionsA great destination if you have faith in Lord Ayyappa. A very unique expression of the Lord as a married man with two wives. Even otherwise the destination is beautiful and picturesque. River, water falls, reserve forest, and a dam extension. Definitely atleast a one time visit. For me personally I wish this would be my starting destination every year for my Sabarimala pilgrimage. It's a wonderful feeling to do the Maaladhaaran here.Written 6 January 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Sud DOakville, Canada78 contributionsThis is the site of the ruined fortress of the late 18th century chieftain Kattabomman who faught the British East India Company, lost and was hanged. A folk hero to many. The beautiful structure is a modern memorial built in the 1970's. Pretty. The compound has the foundations of the old fortress which is of more interest to the history buff.Written 30 May 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Atchaya1 contributionI have lived here for 1 year during 2006 .My father worked in Papanasam powerhouse and we live in a quarters in lower camp.
People usually come here to visit agasthiyar falls which is a good one.
Still upper there is vana pechi Amman temple , lower Dam, servallar powerhouse and dam, sorimuthu aiyanar koil and river and the uppermost place is karayar dam( thamirabharani dam). In those days boating was allowed to the catchment area called banatheertham falls. But now it is restricted.
This place is a pure forest .In a period of one year I have seen leopard twice and tiger once. My encounter with tiger was very close infront of my house during evening 7 PM . I was fortunate that I was not attacked by it.
During day time soft animals like langur, peacock, blackbuck ,deer etc will come. The predators will come out mostly during dawn and dusk. 6PM is the time for leopard. Black bears have no specific time one can encounter it any time.
During 2006 I have never heard any predator attacking human . They will attack cattle. Now the tiger population has increased manyfold and one day a tiger came and sat in vanapechi Amman temple during mid-afternoon in front of a big crowd performing temple festival. So I guess the tigers became fearless now.
Servallar is a place with red coloured wild dogs which are bit dangerous and roam in packs of atleast 4. There are many snakes and pythons too.
So if you want to see forest as it is ,you can visit here it will be very silent and beautiful.
Cautions.
Please don't get out of the vehicle (either own vehicle or public transport which runs upto karayar )in forest. The roads will be very lonely and animals will be crawling outside. We might not be able to see them but in real they are living just
beside the road
Don't get inside the side trees or forest for taking photos or having food. Eventhough the predators there won't mess up with humans, there is a chance that a surprise visit may scare them and inturn they may attack.
Enjoy the Nature but be cautious about your safetyWritten 16 July 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
