Anglican Church Of Bucharest
About
The Anglican Church Of Bucharest (Biserica Anglicană din București) is located next to Icon’s Garden Park in central Bucharest and serves the British community. It’s the only Anglican place of worship in the capital.
In December 1900, with the support of Queen Maria of Romania, the Commune of Bucharest granted a piece of land to the British Crown for the construction of a church for the British community. The church was designed in a Victorian Neo-Gothic style by the architect Victor Ștefănescu and its construction was finished in 1914. Due to the outbreak of the First World War, the furniture that was ordered from England could not be brought over so the church could not be used until after the war. The first service was held on Easter Sunday in 1920 and, with the exception of World War II, the church has been used uninterruptedly. The church has also hosted many weddings and baptisms, and numerous concerts.
The exterior of the church is made of red brick and the church hall, which measures 18.5 by 7 meters, is preceded by an 11-meter-high tower. The interior is covered by wood paneling and the walls are painted, with some paintings of religious scenes. The windows are placed in stone frames shaped as broken blind arches.
The Motherhood Fountain was placed in front of the church in 2008. The ensemble is the work of the sculpture Virgil Scripcariu and depicts a pregnant woman holding the infant Saint George while slaying a dragon.
