Purchase options and add-ons

Warm, feisty, and intelligent, the Delany sisters speak their mind in a book that is at once a vital historical record and a moving portrait of two remarkable women who continued to love, laugh, and embrace life after over a hundred years of living side by side.

Their sharp memories show us the post-Reconstruction South and Booker T. Washington; Harlem's Golden Age and Langston Hughes, W.E.B. Du Bois, and Paul Robeson. Bessie breaks barriers to become a dentist; Sadie quietly integrates the New York City system as a high school teacher. Their extraordinary story makes an important contribution to our nation's heritage—and an indelible impression on our lives.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"I felt proud to be an American citizen reading Having Our Say...the two voices, beautifully blended...evoke an epic history...often cruel and brutal, but always deeply humane."—New York Times Book Review

"The Lord won't hold it against me that I'm colored because he made me that way! He thinks I am beautiful! And so do I even with all my wrinkles!"—Bessie Delany, at age 102

"This Jim Crow mess was pure foolishness. It's not law anymore, but it's still in some people's hearts. I just laugh it off, child. I never let prejudice stop me from what I wanted to do in this life."—Sadie Delany, at age 104

"This book is destined to become a classic! The Delany sisters—leave to us the best of legacies-two sets of dancing footprints for us to  follow all our days ahead."—Clarissa Pinkola Estés, author of
Women Who Run With the Wolves

"An unforgettable testimony to the dignity and courage of African-American women."—Shirlee Taylor Haizlip

Ordered 2 books, one was a gift for the pastor at my church and one for me....I was not told that the cover(s) had a hand written gift greeting written for the giver to their friend. That was my copy so don't know if my pastors copy had the same. I will see her at church Sunday and inquire. This book was presented as a gift over 20 years ago, actually May of 94 so how can it be classified as new.

The sisters were very sensible and lived a wonderful, long life and helped many people. They grew up during some very difficult times but always stood above the fray.

I enjoyed the human story and perspective given by them of observing the changes in their century of living.
It is humorous, grace-filled, interesting, convicting and thought provoking all at the same. It gives me context to our culture today, how we got here and the work yet to be done.

Had to get this for a college course. It's a fast read and interesting story about two sisters who lived through it all. From parents who were slaves to the Great Depression, World War 1 and 2, the Harlem Renaissance, and more! Far from the CRT that is being taught in the schools today, it gives an accurate portrayal of what REALLY happened back then and how these two black ladies viewed segregation, desegregation, and their thoughts on affirmative action which may surprise some readers! Great book and one that will be kept on my bookshelf after this semester.

Sarah and Bessie Delany were twin sisters-and centenarians. They were daughters of a former slave, who eventually became a priest-and the Episcopal Church's first Black bishop. Sadie became a teacher in a White school, thus integrating her state's school system. Bessie was a dentist-in an era when very few women became doctors, much less Black women. This book is their story, as well as their family history, beginning with a White woman who had two daughters with a Black slave in the early 1800s. The reader meets a fascinating cast of characters, including the 10 children of the Delany family-who were all brilliant, successful, and prominent in Black society and the Civil Rights Movement. This book is both educational and inspirational.

What a great book. I made my teenagers read it over the summer. They were not looking forward to it, as it sounded like a history lesson, but then they thanked me for making then read it. It is a great slice of history that everyone should read. It is so entertaining. The sisters are fun and truthful. I wish I were able to meet them in person, but this is the next best thing. It is a very easy read. It flows like a conversation.

Once I started reading this book I could not put it down. It is an autobiography by two sisters who were born into slavery in the US Carolinas and through their own hard work and will power and against amazing odds, one became a doctor and the other a dentist. They moved north to New York City, pursued their professions in spite of discrimination and hard times , and lived to be 99 and 100. It is a down to earth, yet very wise and inspiring book . I sent copies of it to several of my friends and recommend it as a very eye opening description of what two women were able to achieve in spite of huge obstacles.

I loved this book and the sisters!

I fully recommend this book which has been brought to life by Amy Hill Hearth. It is written in an easy everyday way with some little sayings that you can imagine hearing the sisters say if they were sitting in front of you.

Although the book was written the nineties, it still makes fascinating reading. These sisters are amazing and have lead fulfilling and interesting lives.

I wonder what the Delany sisters would have made of the worldwide web? If they were still around, they would have had their own blog.

Get yourself a copy, you will not want to put this book down. These fabulous ladies definitely had their say, their way!

Easy to read conversational, moving and amusing. Thought-provoking accounts of definitely not run-of-the-mill lives lived over a century of huge changes. Lives lived well, in spite of the many adversities, thanks to firm beliefs and faith in the world at large.
