Four crime-solving friends face off against a killer in San Francisco in the Women's Murder Club novel that started James Patterson's thrilling series.

Each one holds a piece of the puzzle: Lindsay Boxer is a homicide inspector in the San Francisco Police Department, Claire Washburn is a medical examiner, Jill Bernhardt is an assistant D.A., and Cindy Thomas just started working the crime desk of the San Francisco Chronicle.

But the usual procedures aren't bringing them any closer to stopping the killings. So these women form a Women's Murder Club to collaborate outside the box and pursue the case by sidestepping their bosses and giving each other a hand. The four women develop intense bonds as they pursue a killer whose crimes have stunned an entire city. Working together, they track down the most terrifying and unexpected killer they have ever encountered--before a shocking conclusion in which everything they knew turns out to be devastatingly wrong.

Full of the breathtaking drama and unforgettable emotions for which James Patterson is famous,
1st to Die is the start of the #1 New York Times bestselling series of crime thrillers.

This is actually my first ever book read from James Patterson."Reading" is a loose term since I listened to the audiobook.+ The narrator, Suzanne Toren, does a very fine job of dramatizing the story and giving us distinct voices that were well acted in character. She did an EXCELLENT job!+ Many say that Casablanca is the perfect written screenplay. I've read 100's of books on the craft of writing and this book hits all the key areas, so in many ways the "perfect" example of how to write a novel and a mystery novel as well.Excellent balance of build up. Characters going for goals, being foiled, then trying again. Subplots handled extremely well and no loose ends on any thread by end of story.> I ding this a half-star for the adult content.I know. I know. This is an "adult" marketed novel. But there is some pornographic-related material, that simply isn't necessary to the progression of the story or character development.I also get that some will read this story and think, "That was nothing...this other book was much more graphic." Yes, there are degrees and there will always be something worse. I simply didn't see the point to have to go there to begin with.+ Well played plot with plenty of clues sprinkled throughout and the appropriate suspects and red herrings. The plot twists were logical and we (the readers) should see things coming, but the story catches us off-guard perfectly.OVERALL:Highly enjoyable.I care about the protagonists, who are not one-dimensional.Satisfying ending.Worth reading this and then checking out other books in the series.

I have almost no words. This is a Series that really keep you guessing until the very end. You have murders of brides and grooms. Some of them hadn’t even gotten to the marriage bed. The man arrested, first you think it is him, but no, it was someone else and in the end someone else and then shock, shock, the real perp and their accomplice! WOW, I couldn’t put it down! James Patterson doesn’t need my review, but I am hooked!

I liked it from start to finish.

A mediocre who-done-it. The author attempts to create strong female characters--A types, which is good, but their connections are superficial enough to be unbelievable. It's already established that 4 women in different categories of law enforcement band together, that's the thing that makes it special in the crime/thriller genre. The reporter and cop team up for essentially no reason and the same is true of the prosecutor. The only believable connection is between the ME/Coroner and the detective. So two of the characters just basically team up just "because."
The relationship between the protagonist and her love interest is pretty standard. Her internal dialogue in regards to it is unbelievable. It's sort of like if you've ever seen "The 40-Year-Old-Virgin," and he says boobs are just like sand--it's like that. Women don't think the way they're portrayed. Granted the author is a man, but maybe he should have consulted with a woman or something on internal dialogue. It's not repulsive but it is off-putting. For example "She looked at me with the fragile courage only another woman could understand." This is from a woman's perspective. What's fragile courage? I don't think courage has ever been connected with the word fragile. Either you're courageous or you aren't. Is a woman's courage somehow brittle? This is the sort of thing you'll have to stomach if you're going to get through this book.
The writing is acceptable overall. It's sort of like someone writing about football that never played the game, or the moon (who'd never been lol). Everything was essentially telegraphed, whether or not it was intended. For someone lacking a great deal of insight into interpersonal relationships, the story was okay. There are a lot of things that are unbelievable during the story and also in hindsight, but I'll leave that for another reader to discover. There are tons of examples. Maybe you'll see what I mean.
As a disclaimer, this was my first James Patterson novel. I picked this up after watching his Masterclass. Now that I know how he writes I have more context for what he covers in the course.

It keeps you wondering who is the killer. You think you know but the more your read the more you know you are wrong. It keeps you guessing till the very end.

If you like crime books you’ll love this one. I can wait to read the second book.
