- A Midlife AdventureDursley, United Kingdom2,660 contributionsA good place to gain more information about The White House if you can’t get a visitIf you are not an American citizen there is very little hope of visiting the actual White House. Even citizens have to apply to their State Senator if they want to visit? As a Brit I find this really odd. Anyone of any nationality can buy tickets to visit Buckingham Palace or tour The House of Commons here in the UK. The Visitor Centre, as other reviews state, is the next best thing. There are many artefacts and some interesting information about how the White House operates. We spent probably 1-2 hrs enjoyably meandering around the exhibits.Visited August 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 September 2023
- Raintree_ThailandBangkok, Thailand3,940 contributionsInsights into the White House! It's not easy to get tickets and access to the White House these days. Not like in the good old days when people could just line up and get in the same day. Unless you're among the lucky few to get tickets (best chance is by requesting through your Congressional Representative), you might enjoy the exhibits in the White House Visitors Center. They have lots of displays about the history of the White House and interesting videos of president's speeches and events that took place at the White House.Visited September 2023Travelled soloWritten 10 September 2023
- Oliver ALeeds, United Kingdom321 contributionsDecent free attraction if you have timeIt's probably the best alternative if you can't access the white house. As British citizens, the embassy won't facilitate white house tours at this time. It's okay. Designed to give you the history of the building and its various occupants. Nice video towards one end of the hall. It's free so you can't complain too much I guess.Visited September 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 19 September 2023
- Steph SBristol, United Kingdom93 contributionsNot the White House but a fantastic alternativeSadly we found that we couldn’t submit a request to visit the White House for the time we were in Washington as it’s simply not possible right now for UK citizens. My trusty guide book said that the visitors centre was a great alternative and I have to say it wasn’t wrong. We arrived early as we wanted to do the Monument after and we needed to get tickets for that so we arrived for 7:30am opening and of course it was dead. Only a few visitors trickled in while we walked round but we mostly had the place to ourselves. There are many interesting items from past Presidents as well as a detailed history of the White House and all its former occupants. I would allow yourself an hour, or just slightly more to take everything in. I’d love to be able to visit the actual White House one day but I definitely came away from the visitors centre feeling enriched with knowledge. Well worth a visit.Visited September 2023Travelled with familyWritten 9 October 2023

- Kevin BMount Juliet, Tennessee3,586 contributionsNice museum! This is a separate building from The White House and it's located a few blocks away. You don't need a tour pass to enter here like with The White House and it's a nice place to visit along with the actual White House (or instead if you can't get a tour). It houses a large museum to The White House and has a great amount of information inside. It also houses a nice gift shop, so you can get souvenirs here (there's a small gift shop inside The White House too, but this is the big one). It's a nice little museum and I would recommend coming here!Visited May 2023Written 12 January 2024

Great video about recent families who have lived in the White House telling what they found exciting about being in the White House. Great little shop; has past White House ornaments. Not all years, but they have several to choose from. Great sitting area if someone in your group needs to rest. Clean restrooms. Close to Reagan Building where you can get a quick lunch.Visited January 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 14 January 2024

It is quite near the White House but check it on the map. It was a very good museum with various artifacts from the White House over the years and lots of information about it. There was a film with Reflections from presidents and other photographs on TV screen. There is also a gift shop. It's a very spacious museum. There was no entry fee. There is security screening at the entry. We were there in early March and there were very few people visiting. I really enjoyed the visit and would highly recommend it.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 March 2024
- moodbluWest Valley City, Utah1,437 contributionsGreat Intro to Seeing the White HouseAt the White House Visitors Center, our US History Tour group was shown a film about life at the White House, featuring quotes, videos, and pictures from people who had lived there. There were artifacts and displays about the presidents and families, a scale model of the building, and other interesting information. I enjoyed a cute interactive quiz with a table, showing favorite foods of a number of presidents, and you guess which president it was—two of the foods were squirrel soup, and jelly beans. There was a small gift shop where I chose my favorite from a number of official White House Christmas ornaments. This Visitors Center was a great intro before going to see the White House and grounds.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 May 2024

A tour of Washington, D.C. is not complete without a visit to the iconic White House. As the official residence and workplace of the President of the United States, the White House holds immense historical and political significance.
To embark on a tour of the White House, visitors must make advance arrangements through their embassy or contact their Member of Congress. These tours are highly sought after and require a security clearance process, so it is recommended to plan well in advance.
Once you have secured a tour of the White House, you can make your way to the designated entrance. The White House Visitor Center, located at 1450 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, is a great starting point for your journey. Here, you can gather information about the White House and its history through exhibits, videos, and interactive displays.
From the Visitor Center, you can walk towards the White House, which is only a short distance away. As you approach, you will be struck by the grandeur of the building and its iconic architecture.
While public tours of the White House typically do not include access to the President's living quarters, they allow visitors to explore the East Wing, the State Dining Room, the Red Room, the Blue Room, and other significant spaces. Visitors can also learn about the history, art, and traditions associated with the White House during the tour.
After your White House tour, you can head to the nearest bus station to continue your exploration of Washington, D.C. The city's bus system, operated by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), provides convenient transportation options to various attractions and neighborhoods.
The closest bus station to the White House is the Farragut West Metro Station, located at 900 18th Street NW. From here, you can access several bus lines that can take you to different parts of the city.
Washington, D.C. offers a wealth of attractions beyond the White House, including the National Mall, the Capitol Building, the Smithsonian museums, and many more. Exploring the city by bus allows you to easily navigate between these landmarks and soak in the rich history and culture of the nation's capital.

Do you need an ID (drivers license) to take a tour of the White House?
Lynn S
League City, TX590 contributions
The only way to tour the White House is to make a request of a Congressional Office (it can be House or Senate). They forward it to the White House along with your availability and about two weeks before your scheduled visit, you get notice from the White House whether you are given a tour or not (don't get your hopes up, demand far exceeds supply so the farther out you can make your request the better). Yes, you will need a government issued ID (passport, DL, etc)

When touring the White House, how strict are the camera requirements. Not sure if mine is passable or not. How can I find out before going on the tour?
Daniel O

The answer is simple. You can take pics after the last security check point until you leave. You can not do video. At the last door where you leave , give enough space for yourself and others to leave before taking any outside pcs. The guards don't want you hanging near the exit.
We just got back from our tour July 2018. Have fun!

Is there an Oval Office replica or the opportunity to sit at the “President’s” desk?
Yes and no. Yes there are replicas of the Oval Office but not one in Washington DC. You can go to what is known as a Presidential Library, most have replicas of the Oval Office, however there are only 4 that allow you to set behind the desk: Richard Nixon in California, William Clinton in Arkansas, George Bush and George W Bush in Texas.

Hi Frances :
No, you don't need your Passport to gain entry to the "White House Visitor Center" - as other contributors have indicated, there is a security check, which includes a "scan" similar to that at an Airport.
You should allocate about an hour-and-a-half to view the various Exhibits + visit the (excellent) Shop. Bear in mind, by the way, the "Center" closes early (4 p.m.)
Enjoy your visit to the wonderful City of Washington D.C. !
