Information you need to know on how to use the lanes for your trip.

66 Express Lanes Access Map

All entrances and exits to I-66 are accessible during Express Lanes operations. 

NOTE: Toll prices may rise significantly above the typical range for periods of time due to unusually heavy traffic congestion or a specific event such as a major traffic incident. 

  • Carpools and other vehicles with 3+ occupants travel free with a properly-mounted E-ZPass Flex set to "HOV ON".
  • Vehicles with one or two occupants pay a toll with E-ZPass.
  • Motorcycles travel free. No E-ZPass required.
  • Buses travel free with an E-ZPass Flex or E-ZPass classified as a bus.
  • Clean special fuel license plate vehicles have no exemptions. Tolls and HOV rules apply.
  • Dulles Airport drivers have no exemptions. Tolls and HOV rules apply. 
  • Large trucks are prohibited from traveling on this portion of I-66 at all times.

E-ZPass and the 66 Express Lanes

If you travel on Interstate 66 Inside the Beltway 5:30 - 9:30 a.m. eastbound or 3 - 7 p.m. westbound, you need to have an E-ZPass or E-ZPass Flex funded and properly mounted in your vehicle. If you are an HOV-3+ driver, an E-ZPass Flex allows you to use the lanes free when switched to HOV mode. (Effective Dec. 5, 2022, this HOV requirement changed from two or more people to three or more people.) 

With an E-ZPass, electronic tolls are paid by being deducted automatically from your pre-paid E-ZPass account. The E-ZPass you need on the I-66 Express Lanes Inside the Beltway depends on how you plan to travel. 

Which E-ZPass is right for you? 

 

If you don’t meet HOV requirements on I-66 Inside the Beltway during Express Lane hours, a standard E-ZPass can be used to pay tolls.

If there are three or more people in your vehicle (HOV-3+), an E-ZPass Flex allows you to use the lanes free when switched to HOV mode.

    • AAA Mid-Atlantic locations
    • Select Wegmans locations
    • Select Giant Food Stores locations
    • Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) centers
