Baroness Karen von Blixen-Finecke (Danish: [kʰɑːɑn ˈb̥leɡ̊sn̩]; 17 April 1885 – 7 September 1962), née Karen Christenze Dinesen, was a Danish author, also known by the pen name Isak Dinesen, who wrote works in Danish, French and English. She also at times used the pen names Tania Blixen, Osceola, and Pierre Andrézel.

Blixen is best known for Out of Africa, an account of her life while living in Kenya, and for one of her stories, Babette's Feast, both of which have been adapted into Academy Award-winning motion pictures. She is also noted for her Seven Gothic Tales, particularly in Denmark.

Peter Englund, permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy, described it as "a mistake" that Blixen was not awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature during the 1930s. Although never awarded the prize, she finished in third place behind Graham Greene in 1961, the year Ivo Andrić was awarded the prize.

I was.rummaging through books upstairs in my grandparent's house and came across Seven Gothic Tales. It was inscribed to him in an obviosly feminen hand and predated my mother. How.could one not be intrigued. Since my father was recently deceased I couldn't ask him. My only recourse was to immediacy devour the whole book. And what a marvelous experience it was. The immense dignity of the characters who had waited for me for decades. The romance and wisdom. I was instantly in love. I believe I have been waiting and looking for Isak Dinesen
ever since.

Isak Dinesen's "Seven Gothic Tales" is one of my favorite books. Recently I also read "Winter's Tales," a marvelous and vivid collection of her stories published a few years later. However, I was disappointed in this collection, titled "Last Tales." The stories here are mostly constructed in the mold of "Seven Gothic Tales," but they seem bereft of their magic. Even the one called "Echoes," a continuation of the story in "Seven Gothic Tales" of a former opera singer called Pellegrina Leoni, lacks the depth of the earlier tale. But perhaps these stories will reveal their magic if I read them at least one more time....

What a joy this book was to read! I loved every page of it. I have a friend who has recently returned from a trip to Kenya and I have recognised parallels between some of her descriptions of the people and those in this book, despite the changes in time. I was not certain that I would enjoy the book when I bought it as I worried that being of a colonialist time the language might seem offensive to me. However this was not the case. I think there are some very wise words contained within this book and the strong voice of the narrative, whether you agree with what is said or not, is eloquent and compelling in its reasoning. I will be reading this book again.
