From one of our most admired playwrights, "an ambitious, complicated and often laugh-out-loud religious debate" (Toby Zinman, The Philadelphia Inquirer)

Set in a time-bending, seriocomically imagined world between Heaven and Hell,
The Last Days of Judas Iscariot is a philosophical meditation on the conflict between divine mercy and human free will that takes a close look at the eternal damnation of the Bible's most notorious sinner. This latest work from the author of Our Lady of 121st Street "shares many of the traits that have made Mr. Guirgis a playwright to reckon with in recent years: a fierce and questing mind that refuses to settle for glib answers, a gift for identifying with life's losers and an unforced eloquence that finds the poetry in lowdown street talk. [Guirgis brings to the play] a stirring sense of Christian existential pain, which wonders at the paradoxes of faith" (Ben Brantley, The New York Times).

Editorial Reviews

Review

“A real jaw-dropper. [Guirgis's] imagination is dazzling and his command of language downright thrilling.” ―Marilyn Stasio, Variety

“Guirgis may be the most extravagantly talented . . . playwright in America . . . To put it clinically, he is a master of American urban vernacular; to put it as one of his characters might put it, the s---- is real.” ―
Jeremy McCarter, The New York Sun

This is literally one of the best pieces of literature I've ever read. I am exvangelical and this made me feel very at peace with some of my religious trauma. It is beautifully written, poetic, funny (it had me laughing out loud several times), and emotionally compelling. I read it all in one go and I plan on going back and reading it again. Every page has a treasure. Please read it.

I'm order to appreciate the play, I suggest reading Father James Martin S.J.s book, "A Jesuit on Broadway." It speaks of Father Martin's experience working with the cast, crew, producers and writers as the play evolved. It gives some great background on the play.

A good story well told. It’s relatively short but poses deep questions through dialogue. It’s better than anticipated. Read it.

I've seen this play staged by a few different universities and companies and it has become one of my favorites if not my favorite play of all time. If you are an atheist, read this play. If you are a devout catholic, read this play. If you are anywhere in between, read this play.

I've read a lot of plays that are difficult to read instead of see staged, but this play reads almost like a short novel. The characters are unique and the author has a very interesting take on theology. Even if you're not looking for some treatise on religion, the play is straight entertaining.

A quick read, definitely worth experiencing.

I saw a production of this play and then read the book. Both mediums (stage and literature) work well at giving an impactful, novel and profound perspective to philosophy, religion and spirituality. If you can enjoy a story that challenges your perspective from different points of view- this is a book to read and a play to see.

This is my favorite play ever. I have lost track of how many times I have seen it in produced in different cities. Every time I see it I come away with something new. I love being able to read it. If you like bold, thoughtful plays this is for you. It is one of the most interesting treatments of what the love and grace of Christ means and role we may play accepting it. Warning though, do not read this play if you are easily offended by by strong language or Biblical themes presented in a non-traditional way.

Contemporary plays nowadays consist mostly of delving in and examining the human condition more or less. This maybe a huge generalization but its what I see mostly and is in no way a jab at modern plays . This play is no different in that effort, however it's premise and plot is a much needed relief from all these stark story lines. This very old idea with a very new spin on the language makes this an engaging piece to read and a more entertaining to production imagine. The story is some what abrupt but at the heart is an interesting take on the damnation of Judas and of people in general.

This play changed my life. I saw it a few years ago put on at my undergraduate institution, absolutely loved it, went on to see it again at another theater in the area, bought it and read it several times on kindle. It's a great gift for skeptics, atheists, christians, agnostics, and anyone who enjoys well-written and thought provoking theater. It's short, a quick read, but with some great monologues for actors and actresses out there. It reads a lot like a story, for anyone who is new to reading plays.

This has now become my favourite play. The writing, the variations in character, the plot-line, and the message are all brilliant.
I recommend this to anyone looking for a comical yet intellectual piece. There are also numerous characters, which makes this perfect for large groups (20+).
The ending to this still confuses me, and I will be re-reading it to develop my interpretation, but if anyone else has it figured out, please hit me up!!

Hilarious all the way through, gritty at times (though nothing compared to his other writings), and a beautiful spiritual perspective portrayed. My favorite play.

A thrilling piece of theatre.
A gripping well written court room drama, bringing together characters as diverse as Sigmund Freud, Mary Magdalene, Mother Teresa, and Satan, Guirgis finds one thing that they all have in common, humanity.
Exploring the very human conditions of love, betrayal, forgiveness, and hope.

I was hooked on this play from the moment I first picked it up.
The play is on in London, 17th April- 19 May 2013.

I loved this play because it removed sanctity and replaced it with plain old humans (Apart from Satan) being very funny.
