- Romas2101Charlottesville, VA75 contributionsWe were touring mansions and historical sites in NY and PA and were glad to tour this estate. In some ways, it was the most impressive of all we saw. We enjoyed the most informative (shortest) tour of the house and grounds. The day we visited, it rained but staff provided umbrellas to everyone for use throughout the tour which included outdoor walkways and some gardens.
The guide had an encyclopedic knowledge of the Rockefeller family, the building of this mansion, and particularly the extensive art on display throughout the house and gardens. The guide did a fantastic job of providing historical context of the Rockefeller family, their values, and the construction and uses of the mansion prior to it becoming a historical destination. He was amazing.
Compared to some mansions of the Gilded Age, this was a real home of understated elegance, refinement and real family life. The gardens were the best among all others we toured. The art, both in the home and the gardens, was unrivaled among the other mansions toured. This place is one that whets the appetite to learn more about the era and the people who built it and lived here. Highly recommended and well worth the tour price.Written May 19, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Lauren MSan Diego, CA38 contributionsThe cemetery is beautiful! Lot's of history and stunning grounds. A beautiful place any time of year to visit. Great for a stroll, site seeing, walking your dog, or just to sit and be with nature.
The cemetery staff host tours around the legend of the Headless Horseman year round. - Fitzriley1Mount Kisco, NY21 contributionsAfter the big storm in NY and the Hudson Valley, the water was flowing fast enough to cover the rocks below from view. - Justin WHasbrouck Heights, NJ5,045 contributionsThe Van Cortlandt Manor is closed for visits because of renovations but during the months of October and November it is decorated with hundreds of pumpkins for The Blaze. It is the most amazing site you have seen with pumpkin carousels, bridges, Ferris wheels and pathways lined with lit pumpkins.
Once Halloween is over, it is more fun as the crowds are gone and if you go around 7:00pm is the perfect timed with the crowds are not too big and you can walk through the display with no problems. It seemed a little smaller this year than in previous years but I figured since the show closes next Sunday, they are not carving as many pumpkins at this point. Still the event was a lot of fun and takes about an hour to tour. I look forward to seeing it again next year.Written November 12, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Lauren MSan Diego, CA38 contributionsFun when getting into the creepy vibes of the Legend of Sleep Hallow and the Headless Horseman.
Beautiful grounds which are a part of the larger Sleepy Hallow Cemetery. Rich in history and beautifully kept. Perfect to walk through from the main entrance of the cemetery on your way into town before you get to the original Headless Horseman bridge.Written May 20, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It an excellent place for light hiking and walking. There’s a lot to see and a lot of beautiful stops along the way. You have to pay to park during the offseason, but I’m not sure of any additional charges during the peak season. The visitors center was also closed when I visited in the offseason.Written September 13, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - JemlnlxBronx, NY5,331 contributionsGreat visit to the Gardens.
Known of them for a while now but finally made the 25-minute journey on a late Sunday morning.
The free gardens are open to the public on the weekends, from 10am - 4pm during the mid-spring through early-fall months. (April - November)
I followed the general directions to the front gate where I was greeted by a staff member who took my name, phone number and directed me to the visitor's parking lot. Once parked in the designated visitor's lot, there is a visitor's information window as well as bathrooms there.
From there, you can start your walk throughout the gardens at your own pace. There are lots of sculptures and scenic paths to explore. Particularly lovely during the fall months.
I took about 1.5 hours to cover the entire gardens.
All staff I encountered were friendly and helpful.

Just a forewarning when you go into the house it is very small, low ceilings and no windows. Can be a bit claustrophobic especially during the summer it is warm in there and you must wear a mask. Otherwise I really enjoyed the rest of the tour.Written October 5, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
