I agree with the previous reviewer that this is a rough CD with all the noises you'd expect from an old 78 or cylinder recording. Some tracks are better than other.
Still, this is a very important record to see what real old time country music sounded like. This fellow was born in the 1860s and must have had firsthand experience listening to Civil War veteran fiddlers and others who'd traveled and heard different styles because his tunes are not the pure Celtic modal music. Rather it is a snapshot of a wide variety of styles. I think I learned more about old time bowing, grace notes and cross string techniques in the first few minutes of listening to this CD than I'd imagine from listening to more modern players.
I disagree with the previous reviewer about starting first with later CDs. This is the first and the purest. For instance, listen to his Billy in the Low Ground, then listen to a half dozen other versions on You Tube. The tradeoff for more primitive recordings is this one has more of his initial style before the recording industry changed things.
The fiddle is intuitive once you get past the first few years and so any player who is beyond their initial growing pains will really enjoy listening. However I'd not recommend this to anyone who is not serious about the music and about the fiddle itself.
