This restaurant has a nice selection of seasonal specialties. Quiet ambiance invites for a relaxing meal and a good chat ! Food is excellent and good portions too . I can recommend this place !

First Class Food and Service

Our son lives quite close to De Merode and on a recent visit we ate dinner there four or five times. Each time we were greeted by friendly staff and the atmosphere feels homey. Tables are set with tablecloths and cloth napkins most days. The food is very good and there are many tables in the square for eating outside. I particularly liked the beef stew and spaghetti Bolognese. The salads my son ordered were very creatively done and very good. They have a good afternoon meal on Sundays and are closed on Monday.

The terrace is absolutely great, and the choice of beers and wines and snacks quite alright. Also, the Polish owner(?) is a pretty cool lady, and can be quite funny actually. The portions of the dishes are enormous, and that doesn't really make up for the lack of sophistication. So, depending on what you want the value for money is either excellent - if it's quantity you're after - or just so-so, if you want a bit of quality. It's a very vintage, old fashioned prepared menu, reminding of the Van der Valk highway restaurant chains in the eighties or so, if you know what I mean.

Pretty good food, slow service.

Showed up with no booking - busy terrasse, plenty of room in the air-conditioned interior, quickly seated. I had the Baked Cod with mustard sauce. My companion took the mussels. There was some mistake in the kitchen and we waited for over an hour for our mains. There had been no explanation given, but when we enquired, we were given some complementary beers and some amuse-gueles. It was not a big problem for us, but it could easily have been had we been pressed, or had travelled a long way for this. The food was good, and the staff were lovely.

Always a nice experience

Visited this place a lot with my students, and we are always enjoying this very nice place. Inside, outside on the terrace, with beer, wine or more... Just a joy to feel an 'honorable' guest at De Merode!

Amazing terrace

This is a hidden gem in Westerlo, "The Pearl of the Kempen". The interior is very cosmopolitan and modern but the terrace is absolutely fantastic with an intimate view of the river. Service is first rate and the food is very good. The salad with salmon was excellent and the hamburgers were very well done. Wine list is great. If it is on the weekends get reservations. We will return as it has a good, eclectic and healthy menu with some great Belgian traditional dishes as well.

A place to relax in a timeless atmosphere

A wonderfully caring bar, restaurant and hotel run by generations of the same family. Calm, gentle and classic - a lovely place to enjoy some quiet time. It's the little things that made such a difference...plenty of locals, clean bathroom, fresh plants, grandson tottering around...Sunday perfect.

Great address

Came here by chance for a quick lunch. Very cozy environment, very friendly staff and excellent salads of the day. We will come back here again! Don't forget to have the chocolate cake for dessert, it's excellent!

Very disappointing.. Reheated frozen meal.. I chose lasagna, the one from the supermarket is probably better... Damage!

Good food…..but…..

Beautiful location, friendly staff, quick service, delicious food... but the portion we were served was really tiny... so we also opted for the pigeon from the suggestion menu... a pigeon is indeed not big, but this was real ridiculously small... luckily there was no wind or she would have flown away, but again nice

The Merode Berchem eatery DEFEATERS AND NOT CORRECT

I looked at the menu and wanted to order mussels for 29.99 euros. The person in charge of Merode came to take the order and I asked her if it was possible to order a small portion of mussels because of a stomach problem. I received the answer "this is certainly possible," my mussels were served in a pot half filled as requested BUT At checkout I was presented with the full price of 29.99 euros. I spoke to the person responsible about this, but she refused to adjust the amount to half a portion. My girlfriend is a regular customer there, but they never see us there again. NOT handled CORRECTLY. This has also happened in other cases, only handled correctly, full portion 30 euros, smaller portion 20 euros. And the mussels were much better there too.
