A Royal Command to Love!

In a fictional European country, a beautiful princess meets a handsome American reporter and falls in love with him. On a trip to New York, she hopes to find him again. While staying at one of the city's finest hotels she meets a kind-hearted bellhop who mistakes her for a maid. She invites him to be her escort, not realizing that he believes he has fallen in love with her. Every nice thing the princess does encourages him to believe that she feels the same way he does.

I don't know, but I can totally see this as an animated Disney film. Lovely story and lovely characters. Hedy Lamarr is wonderful and all her dresses are stunning.

The tale of Princess Charming and Mr. Nobody is a well-worn cliché, but that doesn’t mean that it can’t be entertaining especially with the right actors.
The role of a princess seemed to fit Hedy Lamarr like a well-fitted tiara. Her otherworldly beauty made her a natural choice for a woman who is just out of reach for the regular Joe. People can say that her acting is "wooden" but I can’t really blame her since she really wasn't given much to do…

I just experienced a whole range of emotions watching this movie. I laughed, cried, and spent a lot of time sighing dreamily over the outfits. Of course I think Aggie had a great supporting role (basically playing Aspasia from Mrs. Parkington), but Hedy Lamarr had a really great comic presence and it’s wonderful to see it being used. She was so charming and funny, and I was just squealing with laughter at the delivery of some of her lines. I feel like it took a little long to come to its point, but otherwise it was perfect.

Hedy Lamarr beating up a cop for manhandling a woman in the midst of a bar fight and then going to prison is feminism!!
Was hoping this would be more in the vein of Roman Holiday, like a sweet rom-com between two people who know they can't be together but cherish the time they get to spend with each other. Unfortunately, it focused on way too many other plot points and Walker and Lamarr barely spent any scenes together.
June Allyson's character dragged the movie down for me, her scenes with Walker felt unnecessary and made the movie way too overdramatic. I think it should have been a screwball/light-hearted movie that focused on the titular pairing. Either that, or should…

Another take on the Princess in America story. Dreamy on several levels. Got the cliches, but it's also a lot of fun in periods. The main weakness is it's length. The story isn't deep enough to last nearly two hours, even if the characters are as lovable as they were. For Robert Walker and his kind buffoon sidekick Rags Ragland were a fun pair and with June Allyson as the sympathetic gal and Hedy Lamarr as the glamour, it's a good bunch enhancing the material.

Hedy, June, and Robert!
I admittedly liked this movie more than I thought I would. Although this movie is about 20 minutes too long.
I think when June Allyson smiles, she literally embodies sunshine.
Also my jaw dropped when I saw the Audrey Totter cameo!
