I watched this as part of my girlfriend's ongoing quest to screw up my Letterboxd stats. She is dead set on making Gerard Butler my most viewed actor and is getting far too much enjoyment out of me not wanting this to happen.
"Playing for Keeps" is a glossy, handsomely shot film the can't quite make up its mind. Is it a romantic comedy featuring affection-hungry soccer moms? Is it a redemption story of a washed-up, former soccer star? Is it a father-son bonding film? Is it a reconciled marriage fantasy? The film's biggest issue is not that it tries to be all of the above. It is that it tries to be all of the above and does it in the dullest, uninvolving manners available. With its full plate of story threads and cast members, "Playing for Keeps" ends up being unfocused and tedious. There are some bright spots, but, for the most part, the film is too much of a slog to enjoy.
How is it that there's a movie where all these thirsty suburban soccer moms are flocking to Gerard Butler with reckless abandon, pursuing his sexual interest in variously degrading ways and often with an aggressive manner that absolutely wouldn't fly (and certainly wouldn't be played with such cavalier indifference) were the genders reversed, and it's still only like the third most misogynist romantic comedy I've seen with the actor in the male lead (The Bounty Hunter poses a big maybe, but The Ugly Truth is still absolutely one of the most offensively retrograde romcoms I've ever seen)?
When it isn't outright offensive or creepy, Playing For Keeps is the cinematic equivalent of wallpaper or yacht rock -- it's hardly remarkable…
A romantic comedy with charming hot star cast in Gerald Butler, Jessica Biel, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Uma Thurman is awfully wasted with such lazy writing, turning it into a complete bland drama.
Close your eyes. Imagine how bad you think this film is. Now open them. It was worse.
Finishing this is a long and arduous task as it holds no surprises whatsoever, looks decent at first but quickly loses its shine due to cheap tricks and boring generic qualities. In the end I ended up with something I had already seen before, with parts that I did not know what to do with as they actually hinted at something better.
So I guess Playing for Keeps is the cinematic equivalent of putting together and owning a piece of IKEA furniture.
why is every woman down bad for this average looking white dude.. why is he REJECTING catherine zeta-jones??? hello????
Also known as "Gerard Bugger and the Search for True Love in Soccer Milf Suburbia"
The entire cast looks and acts like they are being held hostage, except maybe for Gerard who is simply doing his Acting
A bland dramedy that plays out like a made-for-TV movie with an A-list cast, Playing for Keeps is a weak, but watchable film thanks to the star-studded cast, a decently interesting story, and surprisingly nice cinematography. I watched this with some friends which made the experience much more enjoyable, more so than it probably would've been had I watched it alone. Gerard Butler's character is easy to root for, while the rest of the cast, besides Jessica Biel, is pretty much wasted. Catherine Zeta-Jones, Uma Thurman, and Dennis Quaid all come in and out as the script pleases, some disappearing for up to 30 minutes at a time! It's far from good, but it's far from a painful watch (if you don't watch it alone).
