Previous reviews have heaped well deserved praise on this CD, which really shows what a stellar lyricist Difford is. Back in the Squeeze days, Tilbrook (for the most part) wrote the music, and Difford the lyrics, and while there is endless evidence of his talent as a lyricist in the many Squeeze albums, this very different setting is slam dunk proof. This is NOT Squeeze -- it is more somber and quiet, less pop gem-like, although still melodic. And, of course, it's all Difford's vocals, which are notably more confident than his Squeeze singing.
What hasn't been mentioned is the drama, and what an emotional drama it is. There are three stories here, running throughout the CD. One is Difford's friendship with Tilbrook. Between the jabs he takes at Tilbrook in "No Show Jones" and Tilbrook's (kind of nasty) counterpunch in "Neptune," this seems to have been a bitter break between two very close friends and professional partners who were among the very elite of song-writing teams in the history of rock (the Lennon-McCartney comparisons were misleading but deserved). And yet they never really made the breakthrough to superstardom that they deserved and (too much) wanted. This Difford CD is not shooting for that pop hit status, which is so very welcome, and really shows off Difford's talent. The other two stories are related: Difford's childhood, including his love of his parents. The song "Parents" is stunningly beautiful. But it's also poignant in light of the third theme: Difford's homosexuality, his realization of which was apparently both liberating and painful. Speaking of Lennon-McCartney comparisons, the stark honesty of this CD reminds me of Lennon's first post-Beatles solo album: Plastic Ono Band, which is a very different album from a very different artist, but equally (even uncomfortably) direct, stripped down, and not-pop.
Lastly, this is a great sounding album (as is Plastic Ono Band, by the way). If you've spent way too much on your stereo, like me, and seek out well recorded CDs, then warm up the tubes and enjoy.

To begin I should say I was not an expert on Squezee's ouput by any stretch of the imagination, which is not to say that I was not delighted with practically everything I heard by them. Somewhat the coming together of Difford and Tilbrook brought memories of other composing duos -although I would not put them on the same level than Lennon and McCartney, they were one of the memories.
This album, Difford first on his own, and only the third solo album from either one of them combined, not only confirm some of his reputed songwriting talent but offers you the work of a musician who has matured, continued to explore his style, and managed to create a wonderful bunch of songs for our delight.
The biggest difference between Difford and Tilbrook, as far as their solo efforts, is -and I know this will sound quite subjective- that Difford's work seems just as heartfelt and true to his soul as his contributions during the eighties, while Tilbrook's does not. Specially Tilbrook's recent second album strikes me as the work of a very talented musician, no doubt, who relied more on his admirable skill as a songwriter than letting himself be inspired to say new things and delve deeper into whatever he might have experienced since Squeeze's demise.
The songs included here are truly beautiful, the passions of a soft-spoken man who still has music to give us and seems as excited as we may be to find out where it'll take him.

This would rank as one of my very favorite albums of the year ... except that it came out in 2004 and it's only this year, 2012, that I belatedly discovered this fabulous album. I loved the old Squeeze albums with Difford and Glenn Tilbrook; some of my favorite music from the early 80s. But I lost track of what those two guys had been doing since then, and in the interim I discovered lots of other interesting music, including two albums by a guy named Francis Dunnery. "Fearless" was very good but the followup, "Tall Blonde Helicopter" was outstanding. Not to get sidetracked, but it just so happens that Dunnery produced this Chris Difford album and was co-writer on most of the songs too. The result is a splendid collection of pop tunes. Not far removed from what Difford was doing with Squeeze, but more refined, more restrained, more subtle. And I dare I say, it could be the best thing he's ever done. I'm not sure how much Dunnery contributed to the writing of each song, but clearly these two guys together are a potent songwriting force. Every one of these songs positively oozes with class and catchy melodies. And with lyrics like: "From Julie Andrews to Jerry Garcia" you'll have a big, big smile on your face when listening to these addictive tunes too. More please!

This is actually a gift for my daughter for Christmas. She is a huge Squeeze fan, and keeps tabs on everything both Glenn Tilbrook and Chris Difford do. She apparently saw this somewhere and asked for it.

A brilliant effort from this poetic man who is an expert at creating mood and atmosphere through the medium of sound.

English treasure. This is a beautifully crafted record. He's not a national treasure JUST yet as CD has much more to offer before any dotage sets in. Real songwriting from a skillful lyricist and deeply under appreciated singer, who's voice make these tunes very alive.

クリス・ディフォードの本当の声
Reviewed in Japan on March 13, 2004
