Saturday Senior Celebration

Before game one of Saturday’s doubleheader, the Eagles honored its 14 seniors and one team manager for their dedication and work for the program.

LA MIRADA --- Biola baseball hit the field on Saturday afternoon, battling No. 4 Point Loma at home. Senior Day kicked off the festivities with 14 Eagles being recognized for their careers at Biola. The list of veterans included Lucas Bixby, Jonathan Kumai, Gavin Ayers, Gilbert Lopez, AJ Ortiz, Andrew Lujan, Jake Anderson, Carson Speegle, Tristan Cazel, Wyatt Duncan, Carson Cody, Korey Shepard, Ryan Lachemann, and Taylor Justus.

The opening bout of the day against the Sea Lions was back and forth but PLNU snuck away with the win in game one. A ninth inning homer put the Sea Lions ahead for a 7-6 finish.

The Eagles were in control in the middle parts of the game, though, putting pressure on the visitors.

A two-out rally in the fifth put the BU squad ahead just after the halfway point in the contest. Back-to-back singles brought one run home with two outs but the Eagles were not done. Ayers squared up a 0-1 pitch, doubling to left-center and giving Biola a 3-2 advantage.

The good times continued to roll in the team's next at bat, as Lujan led off with a double. A tough at bat for Justus resulted in another BU score, as the catcher fouled off four pitches before hitting an RBI single back up the middle. AJ Ortiz added an exclamation point to the frame with a home run. The two-run long ball put the Eagles up 6-2 and polished off back-to-back three-run innings for BU.

The fourth-ranked Sea Lions bounced back and mounted a comeback in the final three frames. PLNU picked up one run in the seventh and three in the eighth with three singles and two walks. A home run in the ninth put PLNU back in front that would hold through the final out.

The group of BU hurlers gathered 14 strikeouts in the contest with Shepard leading the way with seven.

Justus and Ortiz carried the offensive weight for Biola with five combined hits of the team's nine total. Justus picked up three hits, while scoring twice.

Biola is back on Eagles Diamond for game two against Point Loma set to start at 3:40 pm.
