I hate to say this but this is the first real dud Tex Ritter flick i've seen. It's not bad per se technically so it'll get a 2 star rating for that alone. (and the really good fistfight between Tex and Charlie King) Unlike fellow reviewer PUNQ I don't really have an issue with director R.N. Bradbury but his usual complaints about him apply big time here and is probably the main reason I didn't really warm up to this. The film just feels flat and uninspired. One of those super simple singing cowboy movies from the short-lived Grand National Pictures starring Tex Ritter. He sings a few songs, plus some guest bands playing including a song from little Tommy Bupp, with a overly standard plot going on. Barely worth anyones time. Not even for Tex fans.
Agreeing to transport some horses for an acquaintance who turns out to be a notorious outlaw, a good-natured cowboy finds himself in trouble in this Tex Ritter western. Interspersed with songs throughout, the film never really works up much in the way of tension. There are a couple of cute scenes as Ritter humours a young lad who insists that he is the "the sheriff", though this charm dissipates once the boy gets a chance to sing. Jerry Bergh is quite acceptable as the boy's mother and romantic interest here, but it is a pretty one-note role, with the movie mostly existing to give Ritter a chance to sing and occasionally shoot it out. Ritter at least avoids having annoying sidekicks here unlike in the following year's Rollin' Plains, but the plot is pretty threadbare and has nothing as clever as that one's scaring of an antagonist into talking.
Another Tex Ritter musical Western notable only for a rather rousing chase sequence at the end and the appearance (under a pseudonym) of my buddy Hank Worden as Tex’s sidekick.
Otherwise, there’s not much to enjoy here. The usual gang of bad guys (led by perennial bad guy Earl Dwire), a pretty girl (debutante Jerry Bergh in the first of her mere two films), and a lot of bad dialog delivered even more badly. Yes, there’s another fist fight between Ritter and villain Charlie King, and it must be admitted that these two really go at it in their fights. I can’t imagine someone wasn’t very sore after the kind of clobbering they give each other.
