A rack and pinion is a type of steering gear in which a pinion on the end of the steering column engages with a horizontal rack (= flat-toothed bar.)

A rack-and-pinion is a device for changing rotary motion into linear motion, in which a gearwheel (the pinion) engages with
a flat toothed bar (the rack).
On a rack-and-pinion steering system, the end of the steering shaft has a pinion gear that meshes with
the rack.
A rack-and-pinion gear system prevents a train from slipping backward when going up a steep hill.
