Wootton brace boosts Stockport promotion push

Kyle Wootton rises high to head in Stockport's opener — Kyle Wootton rejected a third season at at Notts County to join Stockport County for the 2022-23 season

Stockport County rose to third in the League Two promotion race as Kyle Wootton scored a first-half brace against Newport County.

Wootton headed in the opener and fired in his second from inside the box to give the hosts a 2-0 lead at the break.

Jack Stretton, who scored Stockport's winner at Sutton United last Friday, swept home the third as the hosts continued to dominate after the break.

Kyle Knoyle added the fourth late on with a calm finish.

Newport dropped a place to 18th with the defeat, while Stockport's fourth goal puts them above Carlisle and Stevenage in the final automatic promotion berth on goal difference.

Newport were well beaten today. Stockport very impressive and took their chances well. A surprising starting line up for NCFC with 3 up front but I am not sure we would have got anything today regardless of team. UTC

It's never nice to lose especially in this manner but if it had to happen it's better to happen now when we're all but safe and the manager can see who to keep and who to ship out, not long till this awful season ends and we can focus on next season. UTC

Don’t forget you have probably the best tactical, man manager below the Championship. In fact he could hold his own in the Championship. Challinor is known for getting the very best out of average players.
Good luck for the rest of the season, but holding on to Challinor may be an issue.

We were fantastic today, clinical, Wooton superb as well as Stretton but expected a tougher game after their impressive win against Northampton, but I think they are safe now anyway. Well done to Newport fans who kept singing.

I thought the atmosphere was very flat yesterday, maybe that 2nd goal killed it as a contest, I really felt for the loyal Newport fans getting a drenching after the match and travelling home with wet feet and a 4-0 defeat.
