Miriam Marx has been quite gracious in letting us in to the family's private world to read her father's letters. He was a great letter-writer, as evidenced by other collections, and a great writer in general, having published several books. The Groucho Letters: Letters from and to Groucho Marx , Memoirs Of A Mangy Lover , Groucho And Me . His wit and intelligence carry through.

These letters from a father to his daughter show an openness and honesty, a presumed closeness with his daughter that at first blush seems an uncommonly close connection, continuing across distances.

How many parents would simply write "We had burgers for dinner, I hope you are fine, how's the cat?" What a contrast this collection shows.

Well worth the read - as is seemingly anything that Mr. Marx wrote - and it is worth thanking Ms. Marx for publishing the collection.

As a military brat i wondered what "regular" dads are like, and found this a fun book to read. Groucho sounds like he was a very communicative, open, and considerate father. He sounds funloving and liked to enjoy the company of his kids. I found it to be a really interesting book. And he probly was more elaborate than common fathers are due to his being in the set mind of comedy for his job position. He sounds like a lot of fun and his daughter very lucky to of had such a wonderful dad.

While it presents a, perhaps, little known side of Groucho the letters get generally very repetitive, and the hoped for humorous "gems" that only Grouch could deliver are few and far between.

These letters from Groucho Marx to his daughter Miriam, written over a period spanning almost 20 years, were generally disappointing. The famous Groucho wit was only evident in occasional passages and to be fair you can't expect a renowned comedian to be as funny when writing to his daughter as to his peers.

They sometimes had a difficult relationship and this is reflected in their correspondence. Incidentally, there are no letters published from Miriam, just those written to her by Groucho. Had there been, it might have made for a more balanced book.

If it's wit you are looking for, then go for "The Groucho Letters" when he writes to, and receives replies from, many of his contemporaries in the worlds of show business and literature. MUCH more satisfying....
