These letters from a father to his daughter show an openness and honesty, a presumed closeness with his daughter that at first blush seems an uncommonly close connection, continuing across distances.
How many parents would simply write "We had burgers for dinner, I hope you are fine, how's the cat?" What a contrast this collection shows.
Well worth the read - as is seemingly anything that Mr. Marx wrote - and it is worth thanking Ms. Marx for publishing the collection.

They sometimes had a difficult relationship and this is reflected in their correspondence. Incidentally, there are no letters published from Miriam, just those written to her by Groucho. Had there been, it might have made for a more balanced book.
If it's wit you are looking for, then go for "The Groucho Letters" when he writes to, and receives replies from, many of his contemporaries in the worlds of show business and literature. MUCH more satisfying....
