Another big favorite of mine from 1967, although it was considered a "bubble gum" pop hit, much to my surprise. A catchy tune set in a large city like New York where street musicians played and still play for donations (saw a lot of them ... good ones too ... in front of Carnegie Hall when I was there to see a Billy Cobham concert back in the 70's). Instead of street musicians, I tuned into the late 19th/early 20th Century vibes I have always felt hearing this song, and given the appropriate tambourine dancing atmosphere to this video that also features The Lemon Pipers performing. The song itself was actually a major hit for 1968, although released as a single in November 1967. Yes, I still have the original 45 single somewhere, although this is from a CD. "Green Tambourine" shot to #1 at both Billboard and Cash Box on February 3, 1968, replacing "Judy In Disguise (With Glasses)" at the top spot. The song also went to #1 in Canada.
