18 Best California Cities

Los Angeles

The largest city in California with thousands of things to do and something for everyone.

Also known as the “City of Angels,” Los Angeles is arguably one of the most famous cities in the world. It’s known for iconic sites like Hollywood, Beverly Hills, and the sandy shores of Santa Monica and Venice Beach.

Although there is no shortage of tourist attractions in LA, some of the most unique parts of the city lie in more residential areas. Los Angeles has seemingly endless neighborhoods, each with a distinct cultural feel — there’s K-town, Little Tokyo, Thai Town, Little Armenia, Little Ethiopia… the list goes on. The city’s urban sprawl has become home to an incredible diversity of communities, cuisines, and cultural heritage.

One of my favorite things to do in Los Angeles is to visit Olvera Street, the “birthplace of Los Angeles.” Today, Olvera Street is a miniature version of Mexico with the best authentic Mexican food, annual events, and handicraft stalls.

Foodies also flock to the Grand Central Market in Los Angeles. Located on Hill Street, you don’t want to miss the famous Egg Slut and Sarita’s Pupusaria restaurants.

San Francisco

The cultural capital of Northern California.

🏠 Population: 808,437 | 📍 Google Maps | Website | 👉 Browse Hotels in San Francisco on Booking

Similar to Los Angeles, you will never run out of things to do in San Francisco. The city rose to fame during the 1800s Gold Rush, and San Francisco is now one of the biggest cosmopolitan cities in California.

With historic Victorian architecture and shiny tech startups, San Francisco is a city that blends old and new. The tourist-friendly neighborhoods of Union Square and Fisherman’s Wharf provide great places to stay near San Francisco’s main attractions. More local haunts include areas like the Mexican-influenced Mission District, the chic waterfront of the Marina District, or the LGBTQ-friendly Castro District.

San Francisco’s claim to fame is the surrounding waterfront. Take a boat ride to Alcatraz Island over the San Francisco Bay, or take a sunset cruise to the Golden Gate Bridge. Ferries depart back to the mainland every half hour, so visit the island’s historic inmate cells at your own pace.

After a full day of exploring the iconic San Francisco sites, relax with a delicious hand-made ice cream cone from the Ghirardelli Chocolate Factory.

Pasadena

A city in Los Angeles County with Victorian-style downtown buildings.

Lined with elegant residential homes and neatly trimmed trees, Pasadena offers all the cleanliness and security you hoped you would find in downtown LA.

You must put Pasadena on your California itinerary if you love shopping. Here, you can get lost among the brick buildings and boutique stores in Historic Old Pasadena on Colorado Blvd.

If you’re looking for events to attend in Pasadena, the Rose Bowl is a great entertainment pastime. This 90,000-seat stadium hosts college football games, concerts, and a flea market on the second Sunday of every month.

San Diego

California’s oldest and second largest city that offers incredible surfing and nightlife.

Considered the oldest city in California, San Diego is the perfect blend of city and beach life. You can surf in the Pacific Ocean in the morning, then put on your best outfit in the evening and hit the town.

San Deigo stands out for its gorgeous beaches and warm weather. With an average of 266 days of sunshine per year, it’s no wonder the city has such a laid-back, easy-breezy attitude. San Diego beaches are also a prime place to see whales as they migrate to and from Mexico.

The city is fairly spread out, so each neighborhood has its own character. Explore bohemian bungalows in Ocean Beach, rowdy beach bars in Pacific Beach, ritzy mansions in La Jolla, or the walkable historic downtown of the Gaslamp Quarter.

While in the area, you must also visit San Diego’s north county. This area is full of bustling beach towns like Oceanside, Carlsbad, and Encinitas, which are all great spots for surfing.
