Editorial Reviews
Digitally re-mastered deluxe two CD edition of this 1984 album from the British Pop singer/songwriter including a bonus disc filled with remixes, b-sides and more. Human Racing was released in February 1984. The first of four albums recorded for MCA Records, it achieved platinum sales and a nomination for Best Album at the 1985 Brit Awards. It's release was greeted by a combination of teen hysteria, critical acclaim and praise from the likes of Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton and prompted Elton John to call Kershaw 'one of the best songwriters of a generation'. This special edition, compiled by Nik himself features the album, digitally re-mastered from the original mix tapes and associated 12-inch mixes and b-sides. It includes a previously unreleased version of 'Bogart', a special brass mix of 'Shame on You' and a live version of 'Cloak and Dagger' recorded at the Hammersmith Odeon. The booklet contains a brand new sleeve note written by Nik. Universal.

"Human Racing" by Nik Kershaw is an absolutely unique counterbalance of techno drums and synths, heavy metal guitar and sophisticated literacy bound together by some of the catchiest melodies pop has known since Motown was in charge -- not to mention a challenging and eclectic vocal score and some very impressive harmonies. The introspective cycle of Side One (yes, Virginia, this album dates back to an era when the songs were grouped together in Sides) leads to the weltschmarz of Side Two, with its afore-mentioned defiance and eventual retreat into the hamster-wheel. Brilliantly musical, poetically resonant to a Dylan-esqe degree and embodying a particularly wide-awake insanity only alluded to by his peers, this is without doubt THE milestone of the early MTV era.
So why wasn't Nik a household name by 1985? Who knows. Who cares? When have the masses ever had any idea what music sounded like? That's why Britney Spears has sold 50 million records and Brahms died broke. It doesn't matter. Kershaw's surpassing genius is encapsulated forever in this amazing work. My "original" is locked up in a fireproof safe; I only let copies out of the house. That's how much I intend to hang on to this single recording, even if everything other piece of 80s music burns to a crisp.
Anyway - the syntisizer so much reminds me of the 80's, but what I like the most in this album is how he writes about social injustices, too, which is typical him. It also make the music much more powerful, with such lyrics. Not so often pop music is portrayed as music that tries to convey a message, but Nik does. and that make his music more than music and with such powerul yet cheerful lyrics, his message is still clear
This is only one reason to buy his cd. the other? He's one of the artists that defined the 80's
Very recommended!
Can't say if the sound is compressed like todays recordings. But to me this CD set sounds good to me.I get iffy when I see Remastered now days. This can be a HIt,or Miss deal.

Music transcends borders, racial background, ideology and other intangibles. When you can go online, purchase a treasure and not have to deal with the prejudice, racism, xenophobia and other unwanted line of crap that other people impose onto you it is daunting task at times. I have found some rare, really unusual, hard-to-find items everywhere in Used Shops, Thrift Stores and even Garage Sales.
So for the seller, I thank you for sending these items to me at a relatively inexpensive price and shipping costs for me.
Sincere Regards,

The album itself is a product of it's time. No doubt about it but listening to it again it's astounding just how good it still is. Superbly dynamic and brilliantly arranged with an emphasis on melody and hooks. Catchy choruses a-plenty, guitar solos and the customary 80s keyboards and brass section. The four singles released were radio friendly slices of pop/rock that touched on thought provoking lyrics backed up by memorable tunes.
Included here are the remixes that graced the obligatory 12" format of the day (RIP real format), many available on CD for the first time. Typical of their time, they rejigged the tracks, looped various aspects of it and gave it a punchy back beat. Some of them went on a bit, got a little annoying and probably drove you nuts but listening to them today makes me realise just how superior the sound was to the saturated, compressed and ear-fatiguing trash of today.
Amusing notes from the man himself who, almost 30 years later, is able to recall his memories as an emerging artist in a business that has now changed beyond recognition (and not for the better).
Finally, the remastering is quite simply brilliant. Sadly, nobody is credited in the liner notes but whoever did the job should be proud of their effort. Amazing clarity and detail, superbly balanced with incredible dynamics. Sounds very faithful to the original vinyl. No ridiculous compression and artificial boosting of levels here. Turn it up and be moved by the sound. Exactly how a good remaster should sound.
At £9 this is a brilliant value reissue in every way and hopefully Universal will see fit to at least do the same with The Riddle which is as equally deserving.
Also, let's hope the 'Re-presents' imprint brings us many more forgotten gems that deserve another spin in these dying days of physical media.
