UPDATE: It's worth it. There are about 6-10 great tracks on here depending on your exact tastes, plus the two 60+ minute mixes are the thick layer of tasty icing on the cake (both are great, though they do repeat some of the music found in the body of the album). If it weren't for the sheer volume of music, I'd give this album 4 stars, but the the value is killer.

I had never heard of BT before I picked up this album for $9. At 5+ hours of music I figured I couldn't go wrong after sampling a few songs, and darned if this album doesn't deliver - I'm three songs in and I've already got my money's worth.

To put that price in perspective, you're usually paying about $10 per hour of music, and you're doing well if 50% of that is good. This album is just $1.70/hr, AND it's made of top tracks sampled from a variety of artists.

If I feel differently after listening all the way through, I will update this review. Otherwise, it's safe to assume you can pull the trigger and enjoy.

I have found a huge appreciation for BT's albums. I picked up This Binary Universe and fell in love with it. That caused me to look into his other work. I have thoroughly enjoyed the progression of sound that he has from album to album. I also have gotten into dubstep thanks to Amazon recommending Deadmau5 for me. You would think this album would be a natural for me. Unfortunately there is one thing that has greatly dissapointed me with it. There are songs with alot of cursing in them including the f word. My 3 year old daughter has listened to This Binary Universe, These Hopeful Machines, and These Reimagined Machines with me quite a bit while working around the house. She enjoyed the music and it was our thing as my wife is not too fond of those albums. I was really looking forward to having another album we could share, but do to the cursing, I have to be selective in what songs I play. I am really not sure how this did not land a parental advisory. I have to listen to all of the songs some time when she is not around to find what is acceptable to play. I can tell you for certain that "Damn!" is not. That song alone should warrant a parental advisory. I also am a bit disappointed by how many times this album has been pushed back. This doesn't affect people ordering now, but I preordered this in January for February delivery. It has been pushed numerous times and now finally arrived. I was extremely excited when it came, only to be let down by the extreme cursing. I will update my review once I know what is in all of the songs for any other concerned parents.

It has been my experience that when a DJ releases a two CD set, you only get about 1 CD's worth of good music. This set is no different, even though it is by my favorite DJ. What you hear on this CD will be exactly what you hear on BT's Laptop Symphony Podcast, so check that out first before buying this set.

If you do opt for these CDs, know that each one is very different. The first is BT's experimentation with Dubstep, Hardcore, and Breakbeat. The second is BT's home turf of Trance, House, and Progression. So there is pretty much something for everyone in these two CDs.

Personally, I favor the second more than I do the first. There are songs in the first that sound like Humpty Dumpty was a Vinyl. All BT's horses and all BT's men couldn't put the song back together again. They are, IMO, nothing more than noise. There is nothing symphonic about them. I loved BT's work in breaking down and rebuilding sound in This Binary Universe, but this is very different. It is for this reason if I was to burn a CD of my favorite songs from these CDs, 2/3 of the songs would be from the 2nd disk.

For a "flavor" of what each CD is like, listen to "Madskillz - Mic Chekka" from Movement In Still Life, and then listen to some Deadmou5. It's a combination of the two for the first CD. The second CD is a combination of BT's work in Emotional Technology and These Hopeful Machines.

BT is branching out, and he does a good job at it, but his transitions and song selection for the Dubstep need more work. The second CD is worth the price however if you've followed and loved BT up to this point!

For a digital purchase, here are the tracks I would recommend:
1st Disk:
Tomahawk (with Adam K)
Choose Me II
Hello (Featuring Sue Cho) (Dub Mix)
All My Love (Featuring Jada Pearl) (Xilent Remix)
Cloudburn (Featuring Tasha Baxter)
Robo Booty (Note: This one is like Galaxy Bounce by Chemical Brothers)
Flying Blind (Featuring Jes) (vs. Killbot-War Paint Mashup Mix)

2nd Disk:
Counting the Points (Original Mix)
That Much Higher
In The Air (Mord Fustang Remix)
Without You (Smart Apes Dub)
A Million Stars (Myon & Shane 54 Summer of Love Mix)
Slow To Learn (Maor Levi Club Mix)
Punk (Arty Rock-n-Rolla Mix)
Save The World (Extended Mix)
On The Wire (Dennis Sheperd Remix)
Love Comes Again (Hardwell Rework)

BT does it again.

As a frequent and avid Laptop Symphony listener, I was more than excited we were getting a full mix album in a similar vein. BT put a lot of time into this mix, and it shows. His transitions are spot on, his famous use of stutter edits and tempo changes are abundant and lively, and the way each mix shows his skills with different genres really makes for a diverse, energetic, and stunning mix.

The first "CD" / Mix is similar to the podcast: mostly drumstep / dubstep, with some progressive trance mixed in. It's hard hitting, but BT has a lot of fun with it. The second mix is more reminiscient of his older style: more trance / house, and much more intimate and melodic. Both mixes are incredible though, and you get some neat exclusives like the Extended Cut of Save the World and his new edit of Flaming June.

A great compilation from one of the best DJs around.

4.0 out of 5 stars Drum & Trance

Highlights:

Cosmic Gate & JES - Flying Blind (vs. Killbot - War Paint Mashup Mix)

3.0 out of 5 stars Average CD complilation from my hero

First let me say, I'm a massive BT fan. Got all his work, seen him live and understand he likes to experiment.

I've not been blown away by the laptop symphony podcasts but, thought that a compilation CD would bring together the best of the music BT has mixed through these casts. CD1 is by far the weaker of the 2 cd's in my opinion but the 2nd CD redeems the purchase and is more what I'd expect, with a positive twist due to the mixes.

My recommendation, play CD2 first and leave CD1 in the box.

Looking forwards to BT's next 'BT' album.

having played disc1 was fearing the worst but cd2 makes up for purchase. CD1 not very sure where it would make sense listening to tunes its a bit allover the place and is full fast paced no vocals not a easy listen.
but cd2 very nice mixes and makes up for a poor cd1 IMHO
will retry CD1 just to check but I always go on my initial experience and it wasnt a good one.
still good value at less than £8 cant go wrong
cd1 2 star
CD2 4 star
