I watched the Twisted Metal TV Show so you don't have to

It's shit. It's really shit. This is one of the most disrespectful adaptions I've ever seen. Characters are unrecognizable. The show goes several episodes at a time with no car combat. Most of the drivers never appear with their vehicles. Next to no car combat whatsoever except for a few episodes. They didn't put any in the original trailers because the library of car combat scenes was next to nothing. There are more hand to hand combat scenes then car combat scenes.

Also, you know how I said characters are unrecognizable. That is not hyperboly. I can't go into specifics because spoiler rules. But damn. It is bad. Like some of these characters are the direct antithesis to what they represent. And again, we don't even get to see most of them in their cars.

Also, John Doe and Quiet are some of the most unlikeable protagonists I've ever seen. John Doe won't shut up. And his stupid "please laugh at me" delivery makes the few lines that do makes sense to irritating to take seriously. Quiet is the most unlikeable contratrian jerk I've seen in a long time. In some ways she's worse than Angel. At least Angel was written to be unlikeable on purpose. I think they legit thought the were making her witty or something. She just comes off as a selfish jerk most of the time.

I will give them credit. There are scenes that work. But the scenes that do work are the ones where the show pretends it's not Twisted Metal. Every time they try to be Twisted Metal they fall on their face and fail. The moments where it is completely original writing is okay. But that highlights the question of why this adaption was made at all. If you had these isolated good ideas, then why not just go make another original show? An original show that would probably be much better than this.

If you want to watch some of your favorite characters get absolutely assassinated by bad writing, then this is the show for you. If you want to keep your happy memories of your favorite characters intact, skip this show. I was actually tired by the end of this binge. Thumbs down. Would not recommend. Not even for the most devoted Twisted Metal fans.

Some people say it’s great, others say it’s shit. What I’m getting is that different people want different things from Twisted Metal.

u/bennitori avatar

I suspect these are people who were involved in production. At some point after the casino trailer dropped, there was a sharp increase in people defending the trailers and show out of nowhere. And this isn't theory. Some people on here who defend the show have confirmed they were actually involved in production. I suspect that may be skewing opinion a little bit.

u/WhyTheHellnaut avatar

"Anyone who disagrees with my opinion is objectively wrong and must be lying because my opinion is the only one that matters."

I reserve my opinion on the show for when I actually watch it, but good lord you people are fuckin obsessed with the hate.

u/bennitori avatar

2 people literally told me they were on production. It's not a lie if they actually told me.

Two people in the sub were allegedly involved with the show. That said, those two people most likely aren't skewing how people perceive the show.

The Twisted Metal franchise is very much one of my favorite game franchises, and I've played them since they first came out, in 95 I believe.

I thought the show was very good, and was as faithful as a streaming series is generally expected to be, especially when adapting a video game.

There are several games within the series, and let's be honest, it isn't like there is an incredibly in depth story with grade A dialogue in the games. Adapting it was always going to be an interpretation while trying to pay homage to its source.

That said, I think it falls back to Fandom and expectations. Some fans of certain things expect a show to be a certain way, or characters to be a certain way, and when they aren't the fan is disappointed.

2 people, yet it sounds like you're dismissing nearly all of the praise as coming from them.

I've enjoyed it so far. I wasn't involved in its production.

Honestly I think both sides are exaggerating. It’s fine. It exists. It’s far from amazing, but I don’t think it’s disrespectful to the original series. It just has a different tone, which has always been something TM has struggled with.

Oh dude please FO with your conspiracy nonsense. Sorry but people other than you liked the show.

You are irrationally upset by this show.

I've found it be a decent attempt at turning a game with very little plot into a show with a simple plot.

u/Annjuuna avatar

It isn’t Twisted Metal.

It’s a TV show adaptation of Twisted Metal called “Twisted Metal”, and it does rather well turning a particularly niche video game franchise into a show that more than just TM fans can get into.

u/bennitori avatar

If it's not Twisted Metal, then why bother calling it Twisted Metal? Are you saying they're supposed to hi-jack the IP and turn it into something it's not? Take a franchise that has a fanbase that endured for decades despite no new games, and then turn it into something it's not? That just makes no sense to me.

u/WhyTheHellnaut avatar

If it's not Twisted Metal, then why bother calling it Twisted Metal?

Read the literal next sentence. It's an adaptation of Twisted Metal.

It would be near impossible to straight up adapt the tournament style plot or the gritty inner monologues and cutscenes of Black (which had no car combat, mind you) without sacrificing suspense and/or boring the casual audiences/non-TM game players. You seem to think the show should have been made only for you and the TM players, but remember there's like, thousands of people who still play TM, but millions of people who might be interested in watching a fun action-comedy show by the Zombieland guys. They have to cater to non-TM players, and that means making changes. This happens all the time with adaptations. Jurassic Park had to cut tons of story and change half the characters and deaths from the book, to the point where it was often near unrecognizable as the same story, so I'm sure plenty of the book's fans were upset, but they acknowledged that it's a fine movie on its own. TM might not be of JP's calibur, but it's the same concept.

u/bennitori avatar

Black had no car combat? What do you think the entire game was? It was literal hours of car combat. Did you not play the games? Did you just watch the cutscenes?

Also I beg to differ. Fast and Furious, Death Race, Gone in 60 Seconds, James Bond, and even to a lesser extent Transformers knew how to appeal to a mass audience while keeping car combat fans happy. So this idea that it's impossible to make a car combat TV show while also appealing to a mass audience makes no sense.

I specifically said the cutscenes of Black had no car combat, which is what everyone was begging to be made into the adaptation. C'mon dude, work on that reading comprehension.

Fast and Furious, Death Race, Gone in 60 Seconds, James Bond, and even to a lesser extent Transformers knew how to appeal to a mass audience while keeping car combat fans happy

In fairness, those are movies, and this is a 10 episode TV show. I haven't seen the show, so I can't say how much car combat is actually present, but judging by the generally solid reception from most people outside this subreddit, my guess is it's enough to at least provide entertainment.

I only enjoyed the iteration of sweet tooth. I thought they meshed the darkness of black ST with the zaniness of TM1/2 really well. Some of the scenes made me lol. Specifically the ones that involved his bff.

Everything else was cringe. The holymen, the convoy, the pit, the main characters, the lawmen, butchers, world building, etc...

My expectations were low so it doesn't really bother me. It was a pleasant surprise to see sweet tooth work. I was disappointed there were no supernatural elements. I felt the combat was acceptable since they were probably on a shoestring budget.

I really hope that the series doesn't inspire the gameplay or narrative of the next game. Delivery man simulator blowing up hordes of generic vehicles based on gangs of TM3/4 edgelords.

u/Live-Ring7343 avatar

The fact they took a once popular game with basically no plot and tried to adapt it to a tv show is part of the problem. It's a nostalgia cash grab like a majority of the garbage that has come out in recent years. The entertainment industry is creatively and morally bankrupt.

u/bennitori avatar

I disagree with you no the "no plot" aspect. Because these games absolutely do have a plot.

But I do agree with it being a thoughtless cash grab. From what I've gathered, it sounds like they're trying to force TM into being some kind of Fortnite knock off. Which to me demonstrates a massive misunderstanding of the franchise in general. So the goofy characters and wide expansive world is supposed to set all that up. Despite neither of those things being what made TM memorable or enduring.

Either way, it seems like whoever spearheading this IP revival doesn't seem to have much care for the franchise or what made it strong.

I liked it, really gave us a story to learn about John doe and quiet, and of course the car combat, so why tf do you have to try and get other people to not watch this show?? This season was to set up the competition which imo think it's alot better than just jumping straight into the tournament, so shut your lame ass up and have other people watch

man im was a Vigilante 8 fan, i cant play TM having Vigilante in my ps1 but man the serie dont try to be ambicious and its a simple plot with a few good gags and then you are in episode 9 and without spoilers you see what you see and i said to the tv "FUCK YEAH" and the plot to the second season make me a big boner....
Its a nostalfag with ton of fanservice well done and i see the whole season in 1 day so people need to stfu and let anothers enjoy this serie is for 30+ yo nostalfags who wants to see a show without using the brain and remember the good old times

quiet is so fucking stupid, she is such a bad character the slavery thing is sad but shes really unlikeable and always acts mean for no reason, i skipped through a whole episode of her because it has no lore to the main story whatsoever and seems just as a filler to her annoying "backstory" as some may call it.

u/Accomplished_Ad2320 avatar

The show was really great, i cant wait for the next season.

Edited

what I want to know is,
why are all the white men in the show bad?
why couldn't they follow the source material?
why did they race swap john doe?
why did they make and add this horrible quiet character to the show?😑

u/bennitori avatar

Same! The lack of understanding for almost all the characters was downright comical. Stu was the only good character. And that in and of itself is straying from the source material. And Quiet was downright terrible. Could've been the villain in nearly any other show.

u/ValeoAnt avatar

Stu isn't bad, he's one of the only good ones

Why do you care so much about race?

Edited

I care about them not following source material, this show on the other hand, makes it very obvious that it DOES care about race, also makes it kind of hard to enjoy it .they could have just given us an accurate series and everyone would have been happy, there were good white characters, good black characters and even good female characters in the games but instead they made it an abomination, just like that live action resident evil (in name only) series 🤮

u/ValeoAnt avatar

You realise that Twisted Metal is a series which has race swapped and change entire bsckstories for characters game to game right?

Your racism is showing

john doe was white and only in one game...
why didn't they use thumper as the main character for the series?
that's what I was hoping for tbh, (he was one of my favorites) before I realized this show was going to be more concerned with checking boxes and virtue signaling than following source material and telling a good story.
one last question before I go, why did they also race swap agent stone and make him a white guy... racism?
PS your reverse racism/virtue signaling is showing

Sure, Jan.

I really enjoyed it.

u/Slow-Kangaroo-385 avatar

show is absolute garbage, i agree op

u/Pixelated_Fudge avatar

you reak of those contrarian pissy youtubers that are always complaining.

It's good. The car battles are coming if season 2 gets made.

I rather enjoyed it

Idk man. I’ve been a fan since the original. Now I’m not gonna say I wasn’t skeptical about the show. But after watching through all of it this morning I was pleasantly surprised and I’m very much looking forward to more Twisted Metal content. More of the show and def more game if we’re lucky enough. No I wasn’t part of production, just an honest fan.

I just finished it and I'm inclined to agree with you. I don't think it was absolute shit, as it was fun and worth the watch. That being said, there was so much they had to work with yet did so little. And Quiet is an annoying fan fic insert, I truly believe that. Her Twitter-tier dialouge had me cringing so hard I had to pause it. "It's dull as dickwater. Eat my ass, motherfucker!" Yeah... let me pause and contemplate why I'm wasting my time with this. I wish there was more car combat too, it's not like they even had to be nice cars. Piles of junk would have sufficed. I liked that they leaned into the camp instead of going overly serious with it though. Ah well, worth the watch but this was ultimately a let down for me. Still great that they showed some love to this dead franchise though.

u/4paul avatar

Disagree with op, I really enjoyed the show!

I feel there's a ton of things to dislike about the show, but if you don't take it too serious and just sit back you'll enjoy it.

u/nub_node avatar

I'm shocked that Twisted Metal had comprehensively developed enough characters for them to be assassinated. I though the show was fun like a video game and that seems to be the bar the games set.
