Terry L. Wooten is a judge on senior status on the United States District Court for the District of South Carolina. He joined the court in 2001 after being nominated by President George W. Bush (R). He retired from full-time service, assuming senior status, on February 28, 2019.

Wooten served as the district court's chief judge from 2013 to 2019.

Born in Louisville, Kentucky, Wooten earned his bachelor's degree from the University of South Carolina in 1976 and his J.D. from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1980.[1]

Wooten was first nominated by President George W. Bush (R) on June 18, 2001, to a new seat on the United States District Court for the District of South Carolina created by 114 Stat. 2762. The American Bar Association rated Wooten Unanimously Well Qualified for the nomination. Under provisions of Rule XXXI, paragraph six of the standing rules of the Senate, Wooten's nomination was returned to the president on August 3, 2001.

President Bush resubmitted the nomination on September 4, 2001, and Wooten's nomination was reported by U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) on November 8, 2001. Wooten was confirmed on a recorded 98-0 vote of the U.S. Senate on November 8, 2001. He received his commission on November 26, 2001. Wooten retired from full-time service, electing to take senior status, on February 28, 2019.

Wooten served as the district court's chief judge from 2013 to 2019.[1][2][3][4]
