Address
Neighborhood: Xintiandi
The refurbishment of a block of old shikumen into a carless entertainment center called Xintiandi, filled with restaurants, shops and bars, turned this area below South Huangpi Road into one of Shanghai’s most fashionable areas. Luxe condos house people who can afford the high-end brands that fill the malls and shops along Madang Road. The pleasant Taipinghu Park provides the area with green space and is also home to Shanghai Fashion Week twice a year. It’s not all glitter and glamour, though, as the rise of Danshui Road has given the Xintiandi area a shot of toned-down character. Small bars and cafes, mostly owned by locals, have people hanging out in a formerly quiet, unassuming part of the neighborhood.

This is a popular place for younger generation, with western food /restaurant options. I enjoyed the Christmas atmosphere in this area, with the Christmas decorations in the area, and stalls along the MaDang Road.Visited December 2023Traveled with familyWritten January 12, 2024

Xintiandi, in my opinion, is somewhat a bit of a tourist trap of sorts for tourists and foreigners. That doesn't mean that locals do not like to go there, but rather there are probably cheaper and better but less well known places that the locals would go to. Still, that should not deter the first time visitor to Shanghai from at least making a visit once to the place.
It is easy to get to the place by the Shanghai Metro through Xintiandi Station, and then a short 5 min walk to the area. One can go on both day or night, but it is probably better to go down at night for the bar like atmosphere. During the day, one can consider visiting the Site of the First National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party attraction, as it is within Xintiandi itself.
The place itself is not too big actually, probably the whole place can be covered in about an hour or so if doing a fast one, but to enjoy the place better, it is probably good to try and enjoy some drinks or food at one of the bars in the area. It seems that there used to be more bars and outlets in the past compared to now. The place seems to have changed a bit these days. There's even a Shake Shack at Xintiandi itself now, which we went to try out.
On average though, prices are a little higher than normal compared to other places in Shanghai, which is somewhat expected given the amount of tourists here. There used to be a shopping mall next to Xintiandi itself, but it closed down when we went there sadly.

This is a local pride point that is where many expats have set up domicile, high end shopping and food, last year at this time Shake Shack opened and had a line around the neighborhhod, but there are better restaurants in the area...and a Ferrari dealer....and Tesla....and nice parks.

A nice area to walk about, with some older European architecture in the area of the French Concession. Lots of neat looking cafes and restaurants and a bunch of modern fancy malls.
For historical attractions, I wanted to visit the museum of the Korean provisional government. Unfortunately, it was closed.

We visited Xintiandi with a tour group in August 2019. Xintiandi is a picturesque little area with modern shops and restaurants where you can enjoy outside alfresco dining and have a drink. Some of the shops are high-end and clearly marketed to tourists, but it was nice to sit at the Boxing Cat Brewery and enjoy the atmosphere. Definitely worth a visit.

Nice area to visit. They are still constructing after 15 years. Many of the hip restaurants have moved out, but you have others like Lady M or Din tai fung moving in. Lots of shops between luxury to streetwear

This area has lots of shopping areas and malls. The nice thing is that there are some nice areas with small areas where there are some nice cafes. There are a few local beer brewary too in this area. A nice place to spend the afternoon walking around and relaxing. It is also quite close to the French Consession area.

Two really good hotels nearby - Andaz and Langham. There is also a Holidypay Inn in the Jiading District but this is a bit farther away.
