Authorities are investigating after a victim and a suspect were killed during a police situation in east Columbus on Saturday evening.

Columbus police officers were met with gunfire while responding to a domestic situation Saturday evening, a police union official said.

No officers were injured, a spokesperson for the Bureau of Criminal Investigation—which investigates shootings by Columbus police— told ABC 6.

Columbus police radio room said officers responded to an incident in the 4700 block of McAllister Avenue at 7:08 p.m.

FOP Lodge 9 Executive Vice Presiden Brian Toth said officers responded to a call involving a "heavily armed suspect" who fired at them as they arrived.

Police did return fire, striking the suspect, who was transported to Mt. Carmel East Hospital. Authorities said the suspect died just before 8 p.m.

"These Columbus police officers put their lives on the line tonight. We know that they saved the community. They saved their own lives this evening," Toth told reporters.

While securing the scene, officers were directed to a home on the 1000 block of Lockwood Road where a woman was found shot by the suspect. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

To his knowledge, Toth said the incident started as a domestic call, and there was "a lot of gunfire from the suspect."

"The suspect left them no other alternative but to return fire to save their own lives," Toth said.

Neither the suspect nor the victim have been identified at this time.

Ohio BCI has launched an investigation into the incident.
