      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

The Meg sets audiences up for a good old-fashioned B-movie creature feature, but lacks the genre thrills -- or the cheesy bite -- to make it worth diving in.

Ben Sachs Chicago Reader Director Jon Turteltaub (National Treasure) strikes an agreeable tone, avoiding both unnecessary heaviness and self-aware camp. Mar 4, 2020 Full Review Oliver Jones Observer Asks little more of you than to strap in, put away your phone and enjoy watching a freakishly huge prehistoric eating machine terrorize some scientists before it turns its appetite to a beach full of frolickers on floaties. Rated: 2.5/4 Aug 29, 2018 Full Review Anupama Chopra Film Companion ...exactly what we paid for. Rated: 3/5 Aug 24, 2018 Full Review David Griffiths Subculture Entertainment Don’t go into it expecting high art or an Oscar winning script, this is The Stath vs The Meg and the film never strays from that. It ain’t Jaws but it ain’t Sharknado either. Rated: 3.5/5 Aug 21, 2023 Full Review Alejandro Turdo EscribiendoCine The Meg is an acceptable link in the sharksxplotation chain, recognizing itself as disposable entertainment and knowing its premise isn't the most intelligent but that it's ridiculous enough... [Full review in Spanish] Rated: 6/10 Aug 7, 2023 Full Review Cory Woodroof For the Win (USA Today) If you just want a big, dumb movie about a giant shark terrorizing a group of ocean-bound scientists and Jason Statham, you could do a lot worse than The Meg. Angel cs Enjoyable movie, nothing else Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/05/22 Full Review Carter C It's thrilling, action-filled, incredibly acted, and humorous through and through. This shark movie promises all of those factors, and indeed delivers them beautifully. Although the plot can be a bit boring sometimes and some visual effects can be unrealistic, but this movie can definitely keep you on your toes (or fins). Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/24/24 Full Review Andy B On the surface, there is little of merit to this film. But something about it makes me watch it again and again. It is a simplistic, special effects action film - but it works. Jason Statham plays the dishevelled expert called in despite a previous disaster. And he plays himself (as usual). We have some stock characters in support - an estranged love interest, a cute child, an evil billionaire - but the roles are all played very well. The opening scenes do a great job of hiding the Meg, and the scene where we finally properly see it is truly awesome - the sight of the little girl stood watching it as it approaches gives me goosebumps every time. The Meg always looks superb and while this film will never scar me as much as Jaws did, I just love watching it. The film is a rollercoaster that slams along at pace, while having time for some decent dialogue. And who can resist a film where Jason Statham does a Dory impression? Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 05/06/24 Full Review David W The Meg is too tied down by its ridiculous premise to simply be a good sea monster story. It’s watchable, but something I would recommend watching again. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/29/24 Full Review jennifer F This is amazing it reminds me of Jaws but 500 times bigger everything. Bigger budget, bigger actors, and bigger sharks. I absolutely love this movie the only reason I will absolutely positively not give this 5 stars is because. The Megalodon trope has been worn out since the early 2000's and I feel that if this came out in the early 2010's this would've been a revival for the megalodon movies and would also be an instant classic for any creature feature or shark movie lover. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/29/24 Full Review Mila J Loved the movie, overall. But hated how they almost made pippin die. Never include dogs almost dying or dying in movies.
